The Perfect T-Shirt Fashion Reveal

I'm done!! All the hems are complete and the t-shirt project has been put to bed. I also finished another skirt last night (Butterick 4686 again -- there are 5 total). Here's what I wore to work today (sorry about the indoor photos -- it's raining again):

If you offered to pay me a million dollars, I couldn't tell you where I got the fabric for the shirt. It is an ITY Jersey. If I had to guess, then I would say Trendy Fabrics. The skirt fabric is a linen blend that I got from Fabric.com.
I lined the skirt with a poly charmeuse from Fabric.com. I know it looks orange, but the skirt is actually fuchsia and the lining is a pink/brown animal print (grrr).
I realized that I forgot to show off the lining (fabric.com) on the gray skirt.
ITY knit from Trendy Fabrics.
A poly knit that was in the stash. I don't know where it came from ... I'm pretty sure mom sent it.
Jersey knit - fabric.com.
I had to get creative with the sleeves because I wanted them to mimic the shirt, so I did a little "cut and paste". The stripes don't match up exactly (didn't feel like switching to a walking foot), but you'd have to have your nose in my elbow in order to see it.
Gauze knit from Lucy's Fashion Fabrics and Trims.
ITY knit from ??? Probably Fabric.com.
Thermal knit -- The Fabric Fairy (thanks Stacy!!)
Cotton knit - Fabric.com
Poly/spandex knit from Fashionista Fabrics.
Cotton knit - Trendy Fabrics
ITY - Trendy Fabrics
Poly knit from JoAnn's (another mom purchase).
Bamboo Knit (aaahhhh) - Fabric.com
Bamboo knit - Fabric.com
Cotton/lycra knit - Fabric.com (crazy "I have changed shirts too many times" hair).
This shirt has a couple of "design features". The first is the sleeves. Had to get a little creative and here's why. I'll borrow a term from Gwen that I just love -- I "stacked and whacked" these shirts cutting 4-5 at a time. While I was cutting the stack that contained this fabric, my mom called and I answered the phone. Well, I knew when I laid these out that I needed to remove this fabric from the stack when it came time to cut the sleeves because it was only a yard of fabric, rather than the 1-1/2 yard pieces I was using for the others. I forgot. So, when it was time to put on the sleeves, I found that I had one full sleeve and one crazy moon-looking sleeve. Necessity being the mother of all invention, and having very little fabric left, I cut the full sleeve in a sort of arch shape, cut another one out of the remaining fabric and pieced the sleeves together.
You will also notice that this shirt has embellishment. That's because I didn't see that there was some dye-transfer on the shirt (I think I was out of vinegar when I washed this fabric). So, a couple of velvety transfers and some iron on gems and viola! decoration. You can still see the dye transfer, but I can live with it -- because it's a design element and I was feeling artsy -- I meant to do that!

And loo k-- a nice, big empty section in the closet, just waiting for new friends.
Total shirts made: 28. It was a labor of love, and worth every minute. So, did this make a dent in my stash? Nope. I had a wee bit of fun during Fabric.com's Gambler's Sale earlier this year. Am I tired of this pattern? Nope. I'd make 30 more if I could, but I seriously have to move on to trousers next week.
Thanks for stopping by.

I'm going to take a wild stab and guess that you like T-shirts! Something neat about sewing is that we can make our clothes fit, and you've done a great job!

Wow! I'm impressed. I bet you have this down to minutes for making one tee or do you do production? My favorite is the one with the mismatched stripes but I really like them all.

Wow! You're one busy lady. What a great collection of tops. I'm rather partial to the green bamboo - lovely shade and it looks great on you, as they all do.

Wow!!! You've totally sold me on that pattern. I've been hesitating on it for a couple years now, but this has to be the best (or at least most thorough) sales pitch ever, lol! Nice job!

Found you off of Wardrobe Refashion. You are incredible! Very very impressive and inspirational, especially for someone like me who wishes she had enough time to make that many T shirts. Did you use a serger?

paisleyapron said...

OK, found the answer in your previous posts. Yes, you use a serger. Yet another inspiration for me!

I just found your blog via "Wardrobe Refashion." I LOVE your taste! I love the fun linings you chose for the skirts (great idea that I'm going to steal LOL!).

You look fabulous in your clothes. I still need to "fit" things because nothing looks good on me when I get finished.

You're an inspiration!

Holy smokes woman!!!

How does the bamboo knit feel? I have never noticed it at Hancocks and don't like to buy things untouched.

My DD would love to have that many tees. I'm impressed with all our work.

I love knit tees myself, but I don't have nearly that much knit fabric. However, I've been hacking into existing tees and knit fabrics to make shirts for myself.

PS I'm a fellow WR blogger. :-)

I'm new to your blog, but I had to post right away. I am so impressed with your prolific output. Where do you find the time??? I wish I could steal some of it. ;) I love the t shirts and like how you made it work when design details showed up.
