The fit wasn't too bad when I tried them on at home. The only thing that I knew I wanted to do was raise the back waist at CB 1.5 inches.
After wearing them all day, however, I realized my big mistake.
I picked the wrong size for the back. I decided to use the average fit in front and curvy in back. Big mistake. I'm not sure who I was making this pants for -- certainly not to fit me. I just assumed that I had to cover some ground in the back, but as you can see from this picture
there's just too much room back there. Now a small part of this was due to measuring and not wearing the knickers I planned to wear with this pants (I hate VPL!). But, it was a very small part. I came home after wearing these all day and measured myself again -- with and without these particular knickers (they are shapewear) and the difference was relatively negligible. It certainly didn't account for inches of extra fabric gathering in the back. The problem was my measurements. I must have just randomly added two inches to my hips and waist just for fun. Speaking of waist, the biggest frustration with this trousers was the waist. I couldn't seem to get the waistband small enough. So, I'll consult the many books I have and start a second pair, a size smaller, with a raised CB and wider darts and see what happens. One good thing, I don't mind trashing these when I eventually get my fit -- the fabric I'm using is a Ralph Lauren twill from Fabric.com that I got when they put it in the $1.95 /yard clearance. Add my 25 or 30% off coupon (don't remember which) and it came to approximately $1.79 / yard.A part of me wants to scrap this entire fitting process, but the other part (and it's much louder) says to keep trying. It's all part of the learning process and by the time I'm finished, I'll be able to whip these babies out in a couple of hours. It is frustrating though...
I'm not sure when I'm going to attempt the second pair. I keep creating UFOs like it's a goal or something. Ah well...

Ah, I can imagine it's frustrating. And I applaud you for persisting. I am sure in no time you will find the perfect fit.. and you'll be very happy and proud! :-)
LOL, I've got that same UFO goal !
Good luck with the next attempt.
All I can say is that it's better for the pants to be too big than too small!!
Isn't it nice to know that you're not as big as you thought?
Do not give up the ship! It will be well worth the effort when you get a perfect fitting pant.
I think they look pretty good for pants that don't fit! I'm working my way up to making pants for myself. I have a pair of what looks fairly simple pants that I want to copy. I just need to find a pattern with a side zip that I can learn the steps from. Is that crazy? To want to trace the pants I have that I know look great and follow the sewing instructions from similar pants?
I think you are on the right track to get a better fit. You are already half way there! You only need to perfect the back fit.
Diaper booty sucks. Interested in seeing how the next pair work out. I haven't been to fabric.com in so long and you see I haven't been reading my reader.
I almost had something to show you the other day but tried it on again and it was like a freaking sleeping bag instead of a vixen dress. Kill me now. lol.
Oh my gosh the timeliness of this post!
I HATE RTW pants! I recently bought some that were supposed to be for a 26.5" waist (mine is 27" so I bought shapewear, too.) When I tried them on, they were about 4" TOO BIG in the waist. GRRRRRRRRR! Back they went.
I did try to take in some old RTW pants with the same too big waist affliction and got some really ugly pull lines right under my bum (the front was fine). I think that means too little fabric at the thigh/crotch depth in the back(?)
So now I am in the process of trying to draft a pants pattern that fits me and am very stressed and frustrated before I even really try. (I have no confidence in my drafting abilities.)
Well you are an inspiration in any case! I have to agree, they don't look all that bad and you are totally on the right track. I will be reading your progress very closely...
It's back to the fitting toile for me right after I post this.
(LOVE the comments, you ladies are so positive. Diaper booty - LOL!!!!)
No RTW pants ever fit me either and I happen to be making up the same pattern in hopes of a pair that fit properly. Thanks for posting your first try. Glad my first one wasn't the only wadder! Diaper butt...ha ha h haha
Hope the next time they are better. This is my FAV pants pattern. I've made them 3 times already lol.
