Simplicity 3575 - Hooded Bath Robe

Let me start off my saying that I am not crazy about this pattern. I'm not even sure about the results, however, until I find a better hooded robe for kids, this will do.

The fabric that I used for this robe is a sweatshirt fabric in a Japanese children's print that I got from Ebay years and years ago. I'm not entire sure that this robe is going to fit. I did cut an xl, but by the time I was done, it ended up between a medium and a large, which is my goddaughter's current size. Lengthwise, it should be quite long, which is want I wanted. This thing I didn't like about this pattern was it's construction. Rather than havea separate band running the length of the robe, you turn under the seam (what??). Yep, you put on the hood and then just turn the seam under all the way around. It's not the look I was going for, but like I said, it is the only robe pattern have I have a girl. Somehow, I managed to get turned around when it came time to hem the robe, so I had to turn it all under a second time (I think the instructions for that part were out of order) instead of unpicking it because I just wasn't feeling it at the time and the robe was extra big. Hopefully it fits, but if not, it's not a big deal.

At least the fabric is cute.

Butterick 5153 - Girl's Lounge Pants

I'll just say from the start, that sometimes it's hard for me to stop once I start making kids' clothes. There. I said it.

Actually, this was the first idea in my mind when I realized that I would need to make all of my Christmas gifts if there were going to be any gifts for my family and close friends. Thankfully, when my mom sent me this pattern, she made sure to purchase both the adults and kids' patterns. Now, I don't know about you, but I love me some lounge pants and I'm hoping my goddaughter likes them too.

This first pair almost did not come into existence. I really hemmed and hawed about them. You see the print is Hannah Montana. Now I know that it was just a character on Disney, but seriously, when I think of Hannah, I think of Miley Cyrus and well.. let's just say her public image isn't the best right now. However, I really did like the color and it was the only tweenish fleece in my stash.

As you can imagine, these were super easy to complete. At first, I was concerned about the rise. It just looked very long and I thought I would have to re-cut them with a lower rise however, it turns out that the elastic called for in the pattern is 1 inch wide. (sigh of relief). Paired with my 3/4" "turn under" (rather than 1/4"), it brought the rise down to a more acceptable length. I also thought I was going to have to drag a drawstring through the casing, but it turns out that it's just a bow tacked on the outside. Easy peasy.

I also made her a pair in cotton. I originally had this fabric for her dad, but I decided that this "holding fabric for xyz is not a good thing for me right now, so I just used it.

I really think she's going to like them. I know I do!

All in all, I really liked this pattern. While I don't actually know her measurements, I cut the elastic to a size 10 since her mom said that the waist on size 12 RTW pants is too large. I'm not in the least bit worried though. I used the elastic I got from Pam at Fashion Sewing Supply and it's fabulous. It will stretch for days and days and days. I definitely recommend her elastic. It's the best (as is her interfacing!).

Farbenmix Quiara Tunic

Now that the Christmas holiday hubbub is over, I am working on my goddaughter's Christmas gift. Luckily, the family is used to our gifts showing up some time in January. When Julien was a toddler, she actually thought Christmas lasted 2 weeks!

At first I was at a quandary as to what to sew for her. I really don't have many girls patterns (size 10/12) in my pattern stash from the big 4. As a matter of fact, I think the count is 4. So, I went on the net looking for tween patterns. What came up in my search were Farbenmix and Pink Fig patterns. Score. I already had them in my stash. Woo-hoo! The largest size on these patterns is 11, but I do believe that it will be easy enough to size up when the need arises.

Since this was the first time breaking out these patterns, I decided to start with something simple, the Quiara knit shirt.

I decided to make the tunic hoodie because what kid doesn't like a hoodie? Being an army brat, my GD loves camo. I had this pink camo in my stash, so I used it as the main fabric and dug out this smiley face fabric as the contrast. (Someone may or may not have relieved Wally World of entire bolts of knit fabric when they were closing their fabric departments years ago and the price fell to 80% off per yard).

Let me tell you, this pattern is a dream. I "heart" Farbenmix.

I even got to use fun stitches for the hem!

If you have never sewn with a Farbenmix pattern, here's the deal. Although this is a German company, you can purchase the patterns in English. You do have to trace the pattern, but that is standard with European patterns anyway. You also have to add your own seam allowances. The instructions are written, however, you can search the net (or the Farbenmix.de website) for the tutorial, which is essentially a sew-a-long. These may or may not be in English (the tutorials for the older patterns are in German). The tutorial for Quiara is in English, and that's what I used. I was not in the mood to read the steps when I could just glance at the pictures and then read if necessary.

This tunic, for the most part, was constructed using my serger so it was fast, fast, fast! This is such a versatile pattern. The possibilities are endless. Can you tell I like it??

Harley Davidson Upcycle with Farbenmix Quiara

A few weeks ago, a stack of t-shirts showed up on the bed. It seems that DH had cleaned his t-shirt drawer and deemed several of them unwearable. Originally, I was planning to donate them to Goodwill, but when I looked through, I came across this Harley Davidson t-shirt:

One from Daytona Bike Week 2007 and several solid colors, including this red one.

Rather than donate them, I decided to put my Farbemix Quiara pattern to good use. If you've ever shopped at a Harley Davidson store, you know how expensive their merchandise is, especially in the kid's section.

I wanted to keep the Harley Davidson shirt in the Harley colors, so I grabbed this Old Navy t-shirt of mine which had stretched out over time and was waiting to either be taken in, refashioned into something else, or donated.

Having learned from my first Quiara shirt, I shortened the neck band and sewed it to the shirt in the round. It was quite an improvement. Since my orange shirt was a little too short for the sleeves, I added white from another castaway to make sure the sleeves were long enough. I love the result!

For the Daytona Bike week shirt, I used the red t-shirt for the sleeves and then dipped into my stash for a knit Zebra print to make it girly. Here's the back. I was going to put the Bike Week emblem on the front, but didn't care for the placement, so it's just like the original t-shirt: large bike week emblem on back...

and the small emblem on the front.

Farbenmix Zoe Raglan Shirt

Since I had such good luck with Farbenmix pattern Quiara (you'll see this in a later post), I decided to pull out another Farbenmix shirt - Zoe. Zoe is a raglan sleeve knit shirt with as many possibilities as Quiara.

For Zoe, I knew I wanted to use this knit owl fabric that I got from the Fabric Fairy eons ago. I decided to pair it up with a striped knit from the infamous Wally World clear out. I decided that it needed a little extra something, so I grabbed a floral from the same Wally World sale and used it for the collar. I followed the instructions to the letter (I grabbed the tutorial from the web site and followed the instructions to the letter. As you can see, the neck band is a little loose, so I'm going to subtract the seam allowance the next time I made this shirt (and believe me, there will be a next time). The pattern states that it has a generous fit, so I made a US 11 for a child that wears a 10/12, so she should be able to wear it for a while.

I have to say that when I finished the shirt, I felt that it lacked something. For one, it just looked a little to "blah" to me. So, rather than scrap it, I looked around the sewing room and found this poodle applique. Bingo! I just sewed it to the front and "instant whimsy".

I have to say that I love Farbenmix patterns. Like I said, the possibilities are endless and the patterns are well drafted. I don't even mind the tracing. Looks like I'll be sticking with Independent and European patterns for the kid's tween years since the Big 4 offer next to nothing. I think she's really going to like this. And, if not, at least she's polite enough to pretend and that's good enough for me. I'll definitely be revisiting this pattern in the future.

Pleated Pouch to go with the Sophia Carry-All

The day before I was to take the Sophia Carry-All to work, I came across this Pleated Pouch Tutorial over at Skip to My Lou. It looked easy enough, but I wasn't sure if I could complete it and the bag in one evening. My friend Jamie convinced me to go for it, so I did.

This pouch does not disappoint and is a very fast project. My friend suggested that the pouch would make a cute wristlet. I added a little of my own interpretation in the form of a split ring because I wanted to be able to clip it inside the bag.

What can I say? I love it.

I plan to make several of these pouches to keep on hand for gifts (after I make several for myself, of course).

Of all of the gifts I made this season, I have to say this combo was my favorite. I can't wait to make this for myself!!

Amy Butler Sophie Carry All

As is standard in law firms, I work with more than one attorney. I am very fortunate in that, at this time, I only have two assignments (they keep me plenty busy, that's for sure). For my female associate, I chose the Sophia Carry-all. I chose Amy Butler fabric for the exterior and lining. The exterior is a home dec from the Nigella line and the lining is from Belle. As hard as it is for me to cut into Amy Butler fabrics, I had no problem with cutting into these because this attorney shops on Etsy!

I came across some tags, so I sewed one onto on of the interior pockets.

I followed this pattern to the letter. As is standard with Amy Butler bag patterns, it went together without a hitch. Everything was well explained and illustrated. I, of course, clipped curves to make life easier. I did improvise with materials, however. For the false bottom, I used the needlepoint plastic sandwiched in between two layers of Peltex (or maybe it's Timex--whichever one hasn't been discontinued).

I also added my customary key ring holder (I can't be the only one that loses my keys in my bags, am I?)

Here's a shot of the interior of the bag. The instructions have you lay the false bottom in the bottom of the bag. When I make this bag again (and I will), I'll put the false bottom under the lining and tack it down in there.

And, as if that wasn't enough personalization, I added feet since this is a light colored bag. Even the zipper went in without a hitch.

The bag looks a little lob sided in this picture, but I assure you it's not. I just do a poor job of stuffing bags with tissue paper.

To say the bag was well received would be an understatement. Her reaction was so fully. It was clear that she loved the bag at first sight. Then realization. Her exact words were "Did you? Is this? Did you make this?" So funny. I have no doubt that this bag was on it's way to Albany the next day. She also made mention of using it as a mini-diaper bag when her little one is born. It was a happy moment for both of us. I'm glad I decided to make this bag for her. I was struggling with ideas for quite some time. When I told her that I was making baby shower items, she stated that she found handmade gifts to be more thoughtful and that's when I decided that handmade gifts for this special lady were in order. I learned that she shopped on Etsy and that her mom sews after she opened her gift. I only broke one needle during the construction of this bag. Oh yeah, and I stabbed myself with a pin. Ouch.

McCalls 6274 - Girl's Skirt

While looking for older girl's patterns in my pattern stash, I came across McCalls 6274 and decided to make the skirt for Julien for Christmas.

This pattern was pretty straight forward, although I did experience my usual brain cramp while sewing late at night. The fabric is a patchwork denim from my stash. I'm 100% certain I did not purchase this fabric. This is definitely a mom purchase. I'm sure she intended a tote bag since there was one yard (then again, she always sends fabric she thinks would make good tote bags (obsess much??). Let me tell you, if I added up all of that yardage and calculated the number of tote bags...well, let's just say no one needs that many totes.

I sure you wonder how I could possibly experience a brain cramp with such a simple item. Well, here's what I did. As usual, I was just glancing at the instructions rather than actually reading them. Consequently, I missed the step that said to leave a hole for the elastic in the back waistband. When I realized my mistake, I grabbed the seam ripper in order to remove those stitches and ....

I got a little carried away and also opened up the waistband seam at the front. So, now the skirt has a new design feature...satin stitching where the elastic meets the front waistband (which does not have elastic).

I did have to move one of the fabric patches even though I tried to cut carefully. The one to the lower left used to be center back right along the waistband which would have put it in an inappropriate spot for a 10 year old. I'm much happier with the placement now. The eye is naturally drawn to these patches so I wanted to take extra care that she wasn't going to be walking around with the equivalent of "Juicy" on her hind end.

When it came time to finish the pocket, I opted for easy (or so I thought) and went with a snap. That required one of my older sewing tools, my snap fastener (or medieval torture device). This baby rarely gets used, so I had to drag out the instructions and then practice before actually putting the snap on the pocket. Seriously, I could have done a buttonhole and button in less time than it took to go through the process with the snap.

In the midst of all this practicing and awkward hand positions, I broke the green washer. (sigh). Of course, they don't make these anymore (I got it at Hancock Fabrics in the late 80s), so I had to make do. It was difficult since the washer holds part of the snap on the tool and makes it easier to "snap on". (double sigh). Of course, my OCD led me to the Internet in an attempt to find replacement parts for this guy (no dice). I did, however, find a complete set on Etsy (or was it Ebay)?

and it works. Was it worth the pain? You bet!! (or at least,that's what I keep telling myself).

And Sewing Geek -- thank you for your suggestion on the robe. I can't believe I didn't think of that. Talk about a "'d'uh" moment on my part. Of course, I am now determined to fix it before I mail that box.

Pretty Ditty Reversible Apron

I found this apron pattern while searching for a gift idea for one of my co-workers. I'm not sure where it came from (or the other Jamie Christina apron pattern) -- perhaps an apron swap.

For some reason, I forgot to take pictures of the apron on my dress form.

Picking the fabric was a bit of a challenge, but I knew that this baking themed fabric was going to be included.

Once I got to work and realized that I had neglected to take photos, I enlisted the aid of a live model. Side one is a strawberry print that I just love. Unfortunately, it's a rather stiff fabric, so a dress was out of the question. It's perfect for this apron though.

Here's side 2. Isn't it cute?

Now about the pattern. It's fiddly at parts and I had to do a good deal of ripping and resewing. The results, in the end, were worth it. I'm planning to give this apron another try just to see if I can get through without so many re-dos. I especially like the elastic going across the top. So cute! Despite heavy use of my seam ripper, I enjoyed working on this apron. I hadn't made one in quite a while, but now I remember why I love making them. I expect to make several more (testing out all of my apron patterns) in the future. I think it will be a good use for some of those novelty fabrics that I just adore.

Pillows for a Little Lad

For my boss' son, I made the annual pillow. This tradition started several years ago when I tried to figure out what to get for a lad who has the potential to have anything he wants. I decided on a travel set -- lightweight blanket, toddler pillow and a carrying sack. Turns out, the pillow was the only pillow the boy would use. The next year dad asked me to make another one and the tradition was born.

Last year's request was Sponge Bob. This year was Star Wars. Simple enough, right? Except that I did Star Wars a couple of years ago. I went on a search, but the only fabric I found was the fabric I used the last time. So, I had to get creative.

Thankfully, I had spoken to his mom a few weeks prior and found out that his room is part Star Wars, part Cars. I had this cars fabric in my stash. The planetary fabric was a purchase from JoAnns. $3.50 was the cost of the fabric. I also had to purchase the pillow form, but I had my trusty 40% off coupon, so it was all good.

Since I have tons of zippers, I used a zipper closure this time.

I'm hoping that the planets will go over well. And if not, I tried. There's not much I can do about fabric availability. This time I provided two covers, so he'll have some variety. From what I understand, these are the only pillows he will use for nap time and lazing around.

I wonder what next year's choice will be?

Butterick 5338 and Eco-Friends Gifts for My Boss

So, what do you get for a lawyer that makes more in a year than the sum total of all of your eartly possessions? Nothing, you make gifts. I'm fortunate that the attorney to whom I am referring appreciates handmade gifts, as does his wife. I had to really think this year, having rejected my original idesa of family robes, and came up with some eco-friendly items.

Coasters.

I decided on the Criss-Coasters (the tutorial is here) from Allsorts. This was not, however, a random decision.

I recevied the same coasters from a swap several years ago and I just love mine. You will notice that the ones I made were smaller. That's because I was just going to wing it. Then I realized that I had no clue as to the order of the fabric stacks, so I searched for the tutorial. My squares were already cut to 4" when I decided to read the tutorial and saw that they should be 4.5".

I'm quite happy with the results. Here they are ready to go into their Christmas gift box.

I then decided to make eco-friendly grocery bags since I've been planning to make some for myself for quite some time. I used Butterick 5338. I made 4 girly bags and 4 manly bags.

The construction of these bags surprised me in many ways. They were certainly more involved that I expected. The have french seams.

Bias binding in several places.

And I added extra reinforcement for the bottom seam of the bag: 2 rows of stitching, serging and bias tape to stablized the whole thing.

After 2 nights of sewing and cursing, the bags were finished. Love them!! I'm definitely going to do some for myself -- I can't wait to say goodbye to those plastic bags that always get a hole in the bottom -- but I'm going to seek out a simpler bag on the interweb. Don't get me wrong, these are great. But it's a lot of work for a bag to carry bananas and juice. I think this pattern is perfect for a gift though -- very Williams Sonoma.

My boss and his wife a wine afficianados. I found this fabric in my stash and made...dish towels.

Here's the entire gift with all the parts pulled together. I found these eco-friendly coffee cups at Joann Fabrics and made use of my 40% off coupons.

It's the kind of gift I would love to get myself. Hope they like it!

McCalls 5769 - Mom's Robe

For mom, I made McCalls 5769. She bought this fleece when Walmart was clearing out their fabric. It's been in the collection for a while. I was never quite sure what to do with it. I finally decided a robe was in order.

It was a little freaky working with this fabric. Faces starting at me. Weird. I'm not a big political person and neither is my mother, but Obama's election was historic and here is here piece of history.

I had no problems with mom's robe. Even the layout was relatively easy. Of course, that's because I've used this pattern before for my robe.

Figuring the layout for my Alma Mater robe was a little more tedious, but I got with a lot of patience and perseverance, I prevailed. Hail Alma Mater!

The only change I made to the pattern was to eliminate the interfacing. Just didn't seem necessary with fleece.

** I have no idea why I can't get this picture to rotate. It's very annoying -- No matter what I do, it ends up cookatated when I add it to blogger. So annoying!!

Pink Fig - The Lily Top and Bella pants

I love Pink Fig patterns!!

Just thought I'd tell you that.

This ensemble is the Lily Top and Bella Pants. Love, love, love them.

I have had this fabric in my collection for years. It was an Ebay purchase - Magic Cats.

The pants were very easy to assemble. Although the ruffling on the legs appear to be double ruffles, it's actually one ruffle. (Yay!!)

The top was also relatively simple. One ruffle on the skirt, shirring on the sleeves and around the neck.
I did four rows of shirrring around the neck and sleeves.

As you can probably tell, the pink fabric is not part of the Magic Cats line. I needed a fourth fabric and the pink cats were handy. Thankfully, it all worked out.

I really do love this outfit. I have every intention of sewing up some more Pink Fig patterns.

Tina Givens - Zig Zag Girl Dress - Can You Say Wadder?

When I started Christmas sewing for the little one, I started with a wadder. Totally my fault. I decided to make the Tina Givens Zig Zag Girl Dress from fleece. I'm not sure why I thought it would work. As you can see from the picture, this pattern has a ton of ease. Make it out of fleece and it's just frightening.

The dress itself is almost 25 inches across. Why I thought that a bulky fabric with no drape would work is beyond me. Guess I was doing the live and learn thing.

Christmas Central - Fleece Blankets and Dish Towels

In the midst of sewing for the little one, I decided I needed a break from gathering. So, I opted for some easy gifts. Fleece blankets (why buy them?) and a set of dish towels made from some fabric I found in my stash (actually, it was all in my stash and all purchased by my mom -- thanks Mom!!).

I have to confess -- oftentimes in the past, I've become overwhelmed by the amount of fabric in my collection. Not this year though. This year I am thankful that I have so much available to me for gifts and day to day items. Life being life, our Christmas budget for this year is non-existent. I prefer making gifts anyway and am having a really good time.

Ella's Party Dress - Fig Tree & Co.

Oh how I love this dress. The construction is quite clever and completely appropriate for children's clothing. I can see myself using the pattern time and time again.

This is my first exposure to Fig Tree & Co. I searched a long time for this particular dress and finally found it on Fairytale Frocks and Lollipops a couple of years ago. It's taken me this long to drag out the pattern and trace the dress. Turns out there are only two pattern pieces (the front and back bodice). Who knew?

I had this Cinderella fabric in my stash and thought this would be the perfect pattern to showcase the fabric. What little girl wouldn't want a Cinderella dress? As you can see, I was able to restrain myself and leave off any embellishments. (Trust me, it was not easy).

The pattern gives you the option on how to finish the back... buttons, snaps or hooks and eyes. I chose buttons and used my vintage buttonholer for the first time. It worked like a charm!

This dress is also fully lined. I used a perma press shirting for the lining on this dress because, quite truthfully, I consider it to be an ugly fabric. I think my mom may have purchased it.

The instructions have you cut the rectangle for the skirt lining one inch shorter than the dress, which is, like I said, quite clever and completely appropriate. The lining is essentially free flowing. It is not anchored to the dress hem.

Here's a back view of the lining. (I was way too lazy to button up the dress just for this shot.

I also made the dress in a Robert Kaufman cupcake print. This dress was actually assembled first as I wanted to get any mistakes out of the way before making Cinderella.

Here's the back view. I chose red buttons for this dress, which kind of blend in. It wasn't intentional, I just liked the red buttons.

The lining is a shirting that was, once again, in my stash. I had just enough for this dress.

It definitely makes a cute lining and this is a much better use of it than what I had planned, which was the donation pile. I'm pretty sure this is another mom purchase.
And there we have it, two dresses that I love out of a pattern that I consider to be one of the better ones I've encountered. I'll definitely be using it again. I do not, however, recommend this for a beginner because of the the lining. However, once you figure out how the shoulder pieces go together, it's a dream.

I can't believe I almost forgot. The pattern does not give seam allowances, although there is mention of using a 3/8" seam allowance when it's time to attach the skirt to accommodate the gathering and to avoid having to remove the gathering stitches. This lead me to believe that the seam allowances are 1/4". Fig Tree & Co.'s main pattern collection consists of quilts, so that is how I came to this conclusion. Before I make this dress again, I'll be sure to inquire as to the proper seam allowances. Right now, we just wanted to get the gifts to them since they have a tree with no gifts. I guess they really are going to have a hand made Christmas.

McCalls 3061 - Bunny Blanket Buddy

I have a confession to make. I started this project last year for Christmas. I got partially through the nose and then stopped. I decided it would be best to finish it this year and get this particular UFO off of my plate. I opted for fabric binding rather than the satin quilt binding. I used a fabric that I considered to be ugly for the trim, ears and tie.

The eyes are doll eyes that I had in my crafts collection. For the eyelashes I used embroidery thread and for the nose cotton twist. I did have to struggle with attaching the blanket to the head (I think I overstuffed it). I was unable to sew by machine so I made several passes with needle and thread (hand sewing is not my strong suit). The body of this little guy is fleece, as is the blanket. It is so soft. I stitched the bow to the head and blanket in hopes that it doesn't come off. Time will tell.

I don't recall having any other difficulty with this pattern, but then again... it has been a year.

Strawberry Shortcake Blanket and Toddler Pillow Set

Can you say easy?? This was, by far, the easiest project of my Christmas sewing. I came across this panel in my fabric and decided to make a blanket. I did outline Strawberry Shortcake for a sort of quilted feel. At hubby's suggestion, I added Taliana's name with iron on letters. (I used my 40% off coupon for Joann's, so the letters were about $3). I used a Strawberry Shortcake fleece for the backing and used the other panel (I had two) for the binding.

I made use of the left over fleece to make a toddler sized pillow.

If only all sewing were this easy. Sigh.

Bananafana Prairie Girl Skirt

When I decided to make the Bananafana Prairie Girl skirt, I thought it was going to be an easy peasy project. NOT SO. The skirt consists of 16 pieces. You also cut 16 skirt pieces for the lining. Add in tulle and you have quite a project.

I do wish I had used french seams on the tulle, but live and learn. I also wish I would have gathered the tulle with the serger, but I didn't. As a result, I gathered, cussed and gathered some more. What a chore! The skirt is adorable though. So good for twirling.

This is yet another pattern that I don't consider beginner appropriate. There are no illustrations, only written instructions, so if you aren't familiar with skirt construction, it will be frustrating.

Like I said before, this skirt is lined. The tulle is gathered and attached to the outside of the lining, which puts it next to the skin. So that no one has to hear "it itches", I added bias trim that I made for the baby quilt (I made way too much) over the rough edges and viola -- no more itchy surfaces.

I don't know that I'll be making this skirt again. Most likely it will be by special request only. I do know one thing. If I make it again, I'm letting the serger do the hard work. It is a cute skirt though.

Katie Cupcake - Molly Mae and Pink Fig - Rosie Posie

This little outfit is another one for the grandbaby. I decided it was time to break open my children's patterns and get to work. Thankfully, tracing was fast work.

The dress/top is Molly Mae by Katie Cupcake. The pants are Pink Fig's Rosie Posie pants. My original plan was to just make the dress, but I realized after I had the hem in that I forgot to cut the bottom ruffle. So, I added pants.

I found both patterns to be somewhat involved. I would not recommend these patterns for beginners. It really helps to be familiar with boutique sewing for children. I decided, when all was said and done, that I need to learn to use both my ruffler foot and gathering foot. These would have probably been less painful had I used my serger to gather the pieces.

I also got to do a bit of shirring.

3 rows on both the top and sleeves.

The construction on the pants were moved involved that anticipated. Not only are there 4 rows of ruffles, but there are also 2 ruffle attachment per pants leg. Ruffle, baste, ruffle, baste.

This is how the outfit looked when I finished. I was planning to add yellow jumbo rick rack but didn't have enough. I decided the shirt needed something to tie it to the pants, so I added a ruffle trim using scraps from another pair of pants that I made for her.

I did a rolled hem on both sides of the strip of fabric and then gathered and gathered and gathered while watching the Matrix.

I absolutely love the end result and I'm definitely going to make the pants again. I also plan to make the dress with the third row of ruffling -- I think it will be a very cute dress. I just have to learn to use the feet that I have to make it much easier.

Christmas Sewing - Simplicity 2198

I'm taking time out from my Christmas sewing (yes, you read that right, Christmas sewing) to do a post. You see, I found my camera. Where was it, you ask? Right here:

Who'd have thunk it?
I've made several things in the past week for our granddaugher. Rather than post it all at once, I'm posting one at a time.

First up, Simplicity 2198.

I didn't have any solid color fleece in my stash, but I did have a faux fur that I wasn't using for anything.

I decided to use fleece for the hair, so I had to make some adjustments. I cut out a square of fleece and sewed it onto the fur piece.

Then I removed the fur piece.

I marked placement using a sharpie on the wrong side.

Thanks to Very Mary, I had the great pins so pinning through the thick layers of fabric was a breeze, as was sewing.

I did find that stabilizer was needed in order to do the satin stitching on the face (fleece). Of couse, I have no idea where I put it, so I used a fabric scrap.

A few zig zags and fray block later, I had a really cute face.

Et viola!! A really cute bear faced pillow. I have to say, I love this thing. I especialy like the blue eyelashes.

What's not to love about this guy??? I kind of want to keep him. Good thing it was so easy to put together. Hopefully he'll get lots of love.

I Found My Sewjo While Sewing for Baby

I am finally back to sewing. It's such a nice feeling. I started back with, what I thought, were easy-peasy projects. Sewing for baby. I decided to stick to the basics and started sewing shortly after I found out my friend was pregnant. I sent her a list of what I was sewing, and in the case of the diaper bag, a picture of the pattern, but the fabric choices were all mine. It was a bit of a challenge since the baby's sex will be a surprise.

Here's what I made:

A little baby quilt and knit receiving blanket. The quilt was very frustrating for me because I don't quilt. Learning curves really do give me a headache. The smiley face receiving blanket was much easier. I used ribbed knit and my bias tape maker for the trim. I couldn't find the right width steam a seam so I just used a large zig zag to apply the trim and then neatened it up with a straight stitch.

Cheater quilt: I found sevreral of these panels in my stash. (Thank you crazy sewing fabric stash for making all of this possible!). I managed to complete 3. These were very time consuming since I had to make yards of bias tape (I found a new use for ugly fabric) and then hand stitch the trim on the reverse side (I used the instructions from Bend the Rules Sewing.). As you will see from this post, only 2 made the cut. While I was sewing the trim on the third quilt, I noticed that the quilting threads were coming loose so I just tossed the fabric. It was quite old so...

Here's the second cheater quilt. I also managed to find fabric identical to the back of the panel in my stash so I used that for the trim work.

Burp pads. Lots and lots of burp pads. I have to tell you, making these things are addictive!

Flannel receiving blankets.

Washcloths. I added holders so they can be hung in the bathroom.

Instead of cards, they requested books. Rather than purchase books, I pulled book panels from my fabric stash.

I made two books, but only signed one.

I found a tutorial online and made a modesty cover out of my favorite Amy Butler home dec fabric.

Blankets using cotton fabric and minky. What a challenge! Sewing with minky wasn't fun but it did get easier once I switched to a walking foot. Of course, I really couldn't steam the heck out of them while ironing due to the raised pattern on the minky, so I had to rely on the dryer to do my ironing. I found it to be quite annoying.

Fleece blanket out of some cute fleece I found in the stash.

Diaper bag. I used Amy Butler's Nappy Bag pattern for this. Although I've made this twice before, this time had me pulling out my hair. I chose pleather for the bag since mommy is a lawyer and this is a bit more sophisticated. I chose an acquatic theme for the fabric since (a) this is Florida and (b) daddy is a marine biologist.

I even had terry in my fabric stash. I went with red for the changing pad since we don't know the sex of the baby.

I used the left over fleece to make some eco-friendly wipes.

Of course, after all the sewing, I realized that I hadn't made any toys, so I made these two.

There it all is! Yeah, I went a little crazy but I had fun. The baby shower was quite lovely. It was a Beatrix Potter themed tea party. Such fun. Even the games were painless.

I do love sewing for babies and the good news is that another of the attorneys that I worked with is pregnant as well. As soon as I wrap up Christmas sewing, I'm moving on to her gift. This time I get to sew knowing that I'm sewing for a little girl, Zoe.

Happy Saturday chickadees! We are having a fine morning in this part of Florida and let me tell you....working around the house without sweat is a great thing indeed. So far I've managed to tool around the great room and have it looking much better. Just one box of miscellaneous dad stuff to go through. Booyah! Now I'm off to the garage to tool around in there, pack up the miscellaneous dad stuff and take it to the Goodwill donation spot. I've got lots of dusting to do, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. I came across some great tutorials for dusting/swiffer rags using flannel and since I have some leftovers.... well, you get the picture. Hopefully in my cleaning frenzy I will locate that dreaded camera. Seriously, who loses track of a camera? Ah well, back to doing things around the house that I don't feel like doing. Friggin' responsibility. Until then....

How Long Has it Been?

Oh good gracious, how long has it been since my last post? (I'd look, but that would require leaving this page...seems like too much work to me.) At any rate, how are you? I'm just fine. Guess what? I'm sewing. Yeah that's right. Sewing. I'd show you proof, but to do that I would actually have to know where I put my camera. Sigh.

Let's see. Since my last post I've sold as much of dad's stuff as would sell. Dragged his cabinets into the sewing room. Piled a huge stack of fabric on the floor and got to work. There are still things to be done, but after 4 months of concentrated cleaning, sorting and selling, I ran out of steam. So, I got the sewing room into usable condition and went to work.

I'm working in my usual haphazard fashion...lots of projects going at once. Baby items for a pregnant friend. So far I've completed the receiving blankets, half of the washcloths and most of the cheater quilts. That leaves all of the finishing touches, the burpies and the diaper bag. I'm also planning to make a breast feeding cover and carrying case. Good thing she's not due until January.

Tonight, I made two scarves (okay, making them is a stretch..I did rolled hems on one yard squares of fabric) and lots of kitchen towels. All the towels I made last year either developed mysterious holes (dog teeth) or have disappeared (husband with sticky fingers). I also made some more napkins using old tablecloths. Now I'm going to sit down, watch World's Dumbest and do the hand sewing on the quilt binding. Who knows, I may even finish all of my projects and finish all of the UFOs and start on some items that I'm planning for myself. I'm not going to hold my breath though. I've met me before.

So Boring

So, I'm sitting outside doing this garage sale thing. It's what DD wanted to do, so I went for it. Well folks, it's just plain hot. And because it's hot, there aren't a lot of people out and about. Oh yes, we did sell some things, which is a good thing, but seriously, there is so much left. Plus I really do have better things to do with my time. I'd rather be sewing, you know?

Our first "customer" was a Nigerian family. By the time they left, I was exhausted. The constant haggling. Now, DD does not mind getting in the mix and I know that in certain cultures it's expected, but seriously, it just went on for so long. I was actually happy to see them leave. After this, I'm off to the storage unit to take a picture of the washer/dryer and deep freezer. With any luck, I'll have them sold this weekend. And the rest of it? Let's just say I'm over this and we're going to do this my way which is just to donate everything and try to sell the hunting/fishing things on Ebay. I mean seriously, do I really have time for this? I'll never make back the money I spent storing these items, so what's the point? Would that mom had done what I asked and had an estate sale right there in his apartment and let the estate sale service handle everything. Sigh. I know it's a generation thing. She thinks everything is worth what she paid for it when that's not really the case. Suffice it to say, it's a message that does not sink in.

So now I'm going to go and wake up "he who wanted to do this" and have him help me move this ~~crap~~ stuff back into the garage so I can (a) go to the store, (b) take pictures at the storage, (c) drink coffee, and (d) take a nap. (e) will have to wait until Monday -- it's a call to the charity of my choice to come and pick this stuff up.

That's all for now. Tomorrow, when I'm rested, I'm going into my sewing room with boxes and a leaf blower. "Take that clutter!"

It's Overwhelming

I actually stitched a few seams today! I can't tell you what pattern it is because I truly don't know. You see, I was trying to avoid this (with the exception of my laundry that is trying to dry while being crowded by bags of "stuff"):

You could say I'm overwhelmed and you'd be right. These are most of the boxes of household and leisure goods that belonged to my dad. We plan to have the first garage/estate sale next weekend and look at this. I am at the point of wondering if we are going to be able to pull this off. I really have to get rid of these things and want them to go to good homes. And yeah, the cash would be nice. But, like I said, it's only some of the stuff. The storage is still stuffed with furniture, in addition to household appliances and some more boxes of stuff (big boxes). My original goal was to have the unit empty by today so I wouldn't have to pay for another month. So NOT going to happen. Hmmph. Ah well, I have a week to get everything organized and priced. Thankfully, I've been through all of the boxes. It's just so overwhelming. These pictures alone are giving me a headache.
On a more positive note, while doing this, I also washed these:

Oh and get this. You know how Wally-World decided that no one sewed anymore and, therefore, they decided to remove fabric from their stores? Well, guess what's back at my neighborhood super Wally-World? Yep, fabric! Someone must have told them about those long lines at the cutting table at JoAnn (across the street) full of people who don't sew. They aren't up at running yet, but are busy stocking Cranston fabrics and Simplicity patterns. (Dumb asses).

So, getting back to my original story. I did some sewing today. Probably as a way to avoid dealing with the mess in my garage (and in my house, and at the storage). The only things I can tell you at this point in the game is that it's a dress, I found four pieces sitting around, so I looked at them and figured I had a simple dress on my hands (80's or 90's pattern or maybe early 2000, how the heck do I know?). I have no idea (well, a small idea) of where I can find the pattern or instructions, so I just put it together. I believe this simple dress should have a drawstring waist (I remember something about that), but I know I didn't cut it out of my fabric. The dress may also have facings, but I didn't see them laying around, so I just used bias tape to finish the sleeves and neck. I can also tell you that I'm not sure what I saw in this fabric. Guess it was because I don't need a slip. Ah well, a few more stitches, some elastic and I'm done.

Jeeze, the pictures of my garage mess and the thought of putting it all together is giving me an even bigger headache, so I'm outta here.

It's Been a Long, Long Time. I Just Can't Get You Off of My Mind.

Well hello sewing community. How are you? I'm doing just fine, having finally broken my paralysis and seeing progress on the old homestead. I've also managed to begin to make a dent in cleaning out the storage unit containing my father's possessions. It is definitely no longer in the budget and it's just time. Thankfully 2 years of waiting has made this process much more tolerable. Now I can look at everything and see it for what it is...the items that facilitated dad's lifestyle. The hard part will be the garage sale. Sometimes I look at all of it and wonder if we can really do this on our own. Then I just take a deep breath and keep going. It may take a couple of garage sales, but we'll get there and what doesn't sale will make it's way to the nearest charity shop.

So what have you all been doing? Are you enjoying your summer, heat notwithstanding? Rest assured that although you have not heard from me, I've been lurking in the background reading your blogs and enjoying your creations. I've also amused myself with blog posts that are still dredging up the same old subjects. They crack me up. Especially the constant discussions questioning the wisdom of using quilting fabrics for garments or making muslins. In the end I say this, who cares? Do what makes you happy? You want to make a dress out of a tarp, then go for it. Just because it doesn't suit me, doesn't mean it's wrong. Want to just go for it and make those pants out of your fashion fabric? Do that too! Life is too short to debate and argue about what other people are doing. Just do your own thing and everything will be fine. Of course, that's just my view and it's tainted with age.

I've managed to find a favorite commercial, which is unusual. It's the car commercial where the young girl is in front of her laptop talking about her parents and how they needed to sign up for Facebook. Then she complains that they only have 19 FB friends and she has 628 (or something to that effect). Yet we cut away from her to see her parents out on their bikes with friends hitting the trail. What does this young woman think of that? That her parents aren't living because they don't maintain a huge online presence and that she's the one who's really living as she sits alone in the house in front of a computer. That commercial is priceless. And no, I don't know what make and model car the advertisers were trying to sell (I guess that makes the ad a bit of a fail in that department).

What else? Ah yes. Sorbetto. I love seeing all of the iterations of it and am planning a few for myself. I even have the print out on the top of my stack. Lovely indeed.

Well, sewing world, I think I'll retire for a nap. I was up quite early this morning because I was scheduled to read at the first mass. Time for my post-church nap and then another trip to the storage.

Vintage Linens

Holy crap! Here I am again with another post. Don't get too excited, it's a pre-dated post. I just couldn't resist the opportunity to bore the crap out of people.

So, what do I have to say? Not a lot. I did manage to finish cleaning my closet (well, almost -- I still have to take a long hard look at my bags and shoes), which meant that I worked in my sewing room. I found a lot of clean laundry in there and discovered that somewhere along the line, I became a relatively ridiculous woman. Oh now don't go feeling sorry for me. I'm okay with the notion of being ridiculous. I did do something positive though. I took my vintage napkins and dish towels and turned them into...... napkins and dish towels. That's right, I took them into the kitchen and put them in the drawer to be used. What was I thinking? Oh yes, I remember. I was thinking of all the possibilities. Turning something old into something new. My heart was in the right place, however, I never put the plan into action and created more clutter. So one situation has been remedied. Wow that was easy. Using an item for its intended purpose. Who knew?

2011 Already? Interesting....

My, my, my ... how time flies. One minute I'm contemplating sewing and the next minute it's a new year. Go figure. So, sewing world, how are we doing? I, for one, barely sewed a stitch in 2010. As a matter of fact, my sewing room turned into a storage place for imagined projects and laundry. Yeah, that's how I roll. And I admit that I was so not going to do a new year post because, truth be told, they kind of annoy me. I guess that's because I tend to roll with the punches instead of making a list of things I plan to do only to not do them. It's a completely annoying personality trait.

I will admit, however, that I did accomplish something during 2010. I actually planned for it (which is the opposite of what I said in the preceding paragraph (see how duplicitous I am?). So what was this great thing I accomplished? Nothing specific. 2010 was the year I planned to concentrate on me. And I've done that (sort of). Let's see, I joined a gym at the end of July and I still show up (take that quitting spirit!!). I've visited dentists and doctors and found a hair stylist who was more than willing to cut off all of my hair in a gym-friendly style and take out the gray (I'm just not ready for those gray hairs yet). I've spent a lot of time reading silly books (lots of Urban Fantasy) and reading style blogs (finally got that out of my system). I spent hours stalking the Talbots website looking for deals on work clothes (score!!). Oh and I started a new job in April. So, yeah, things happened in 2010.

So, what are my plans for 2011? (Yes, I know that no one cares but I'm going to post it anyway). Go back to sewing. Well, that and figure out what items need to invite themselves out of my life. So, I guess the theme of 2011 is to (a) continue making me a priority and try to reduce the amount of carbs that I shove into my system, (b) drink more water, (c) continue to go the gym 4-5 days a week, (d) get rid of things that are not being utilized...enough with the "never use it don't want to get rid of it because it's still good" mentality, (e) continue to work on my personal style and (f) sew because our budget will be even tighter in 2011, and I like new clothes. (Oh and make my cousin a purse). I would add that I'd like to blog every day but that's silly. Now that I have a camera that works (and an inherited laptop that works most of the time), I should be able to post more consistently. Unless I really get into watching stupid movies. If that happens, all bets are off. Like I said, I don't do lists of things I plan to accomplish. (well, I do, but I rarely pay attention to them).

Ah well, enough double-talk, I have a closet to clean and a tote bag to duplicate. Until the next time,

So HOW is everyone in the sewing world? Me, I'm just fine. Doing another one of my seemingly patented "I'm still here, but with nothing to show you" posts. Yeah, I realize it's getting pretty old, but it is what it is right?

I admit that I have yet to sew a stitch and, going further, I admit to a stack of alterations and one refashion sitting beside the machine. I haven't moved rooms yet either. That's what vacations are for and I have 2 weeks on the books that I need to take before years-end (can I get a woo-hoo?).

I have not, however, been idle. I'm still hitting the gym and discovering muscles I didn't know I had. I still smell like Icy Hot on some days and Advil is my friend. I'm getting results that are quite slow in their arrival, yet I persist. It's all about life changes not instant results, right? (Yeah, right). That being said, I've been thinking. A lot. About aesthetics. Specifically, my style aesthetic. I have yet to pin down my personal style, but I'm getting close. I study magazines, sewing and style blogs, people on the street and my closet. I'm really trying to look at the items in my closet and think about why there are there? I'm also trying to pay attention to how I feel on a day to day basis. What do I want to look like when I arrive to the office? What about lounging around the house? Running errands? Eventually, I may even care what I look like when I get to the gym, but I doubt it -- all I do is get sweaty.

So, that's where I am in my journey. I don't know much, but I do know that I want to sew with a plan. Sew garments that are going to get a lot of use, because, quite frankly, my free time is limited and I don't want to waste it on garments that are going to head to the Goodwill a month after I complete them. In the meantime, I continue to not only study myself, but also the fabric choices and construction of the ready to wear pieces in my closet. Oh, and evaluate my shoes.

I'm a Bad Blogger

Yeah, I'm a very bad blogger, but I figure you know that by now. In my defense, I have been composing blog posts on a daily basis in my head...

Today I was actually going to do a real post, with pictures and everything. I didn't get that far though. Instead, I spent the day on the back of a Harley and visiting friends. I never even made it to the gym (hmmph) nor did I eat in a way conducive to kick-starting my sleeping metabolism. At least I hope it's just sleeping. It's entirely possible that it's in a complete coma. (Sigh). Yep, that was the news at my one month weight in a measurement session at the gym. Very little weight lost, BMI down, but body fat was up. After working out 5-6 days a week. Grrr. Turns out it really is important to eat 1 hour after getting out of bed. So, that's my goal for this week -- to eat breakfast when I get up, which is so not me. I need that time to drink coffee and stare! Ah well, I digress...

Hopefully tomorrow I will get my pictures downloaded and post the picture of the 4th of July outfit (2 months after the fact, but at least I haven't forgotten, right?). I'm not holding my breath though... we're off visiting again (hopefully in a car this time--we kept passing temperature signs that said 100 degrees. At least it was a cool 93 when we started home (had to outrun some rain clouds)).

So, as soon as I get my act in gear, I'll return with that post in addition to telling you all about an award I got from Smoking Needles Knitting that I don't deserve since I've been crap as a blogger as of late. At least I know she understands that when it's time to hop on a Hog and go, you just go!

In other news, and something I file under "No Friggin' Way", hubby has graciously decided to move out of his Harley room (he never goes in there) and let me have that space for my sewing room. So, I'll get the black and gray room and he'll get my pretty blue room, which is really funny (one of these days, I'll re-paint the rooms, although I doubt I'll be putting more black on the walls). This was supposed to be clean the closet and find a nice niche in the garage for his things until I can get moved, but ....

Well, I'm off to continue doing nothing.... we'll talk later.

Yeah, I Know.... It's Been a While

Yep, it's been a long while since my last post. A very long while. Long enough to collect quite a bit of spam in my comments. Lucky me, right? The upside of that is the new spam feature. Who knew?? (guess I should check in more often)

So, no sewing here other than a tablecloth and some alterations to a vintage dress. I've been thinking about it though. I keep reminding myself that if I don't start sewing for the holidays now, I'll never get to experience a hand-made Christmas. So, while I try to motivate myself to clean my closet and get ready for fall, in addition to cleaning my storage, I mean, sewing room, I live vicariously through those that are actively sewing. Well, that and continuing to hit the gym 5-6 days a week. I'm still waiting for it to actually feel good (I'm in week 4). Right now, I just go in, huff and puff, and then come home to shower and sleep. Hopefully the endorphins will show up next month.

Let the Sewing Begin

Despite the fact that I am exhausted and bleary eyed, I am headed into the sewing room to complete the 4th of July ensemble. I actually started yesterday and have the pants to the almost complete phase. Then it was off to the movie theater to enjoy the Twilight Experience -- 3 movies, one night. It was a lot of fun and my first triple feature. Luckily, we got there early 4:40 p.m. (6:30 p.m. movie start) and got not only a great parking space, but great seats. Even ate movie food (which almost immediately caused swelling in my fingers from all of the salt - had to spring for one of those gigantic waters). The cool thing about the package deal is that we got lanyards and $10 gift cards. It was wild to see how many people were in line waiting for the 12:01 a.m. movie as early as 8:00 p.m.!! But I digress...

I'll be making simple summer skirts for myself. This heat is nothing short of brutal, so I thought simple summer skirts with t-shirts for a cool summer "uniform."

The hardest part of making an outfit under pressure was decided on which fabrics to use with which component. Here's what I decided:

I'm really excited to finally be using these patterns. They are all from Pink Fig patterns. Since the high temperatures in the Seattle areas are only around 70 degrees, I decided to go all out with a kiddie couture ensemble. I'm making the corset style shirt in the Julie top; The Olivia Top is comprised of 2 fabrics, and the Bella pants (minus the pocket), will be made from the starred fabric (actually, the pants are complete minus the elastic at the waist).

Now that I have shirring instructions in hand from the Portabella Pixie website, I'm off to complete the Olivia top, which I am making with 3/4" sleeves and no bottom elastic. Then I'll tackle the Julie top, which, at least to my eyes, seems to be the most complicated. We shall see.

Finally .. A New Sewing Project

Yay! I finally have a new sewing project on the table that makes me actually want to change the thread on my sewing machine and get to work. I also have another one that I have to complete this weekend that is not going to be fun, so I'm procrastinating. The not so fun job? Revamping an old tie for a friend. The fun job? A 4th of July outfit for our granddaughter. We just got off the phone with the kids who asked if I could make an outfit for their 4th of July barbecue. Of course I said yes. I love making kids clothes and since I don't need anything for myself, this may just be the project that gets me back in front of my sewing machine again (plus I really do need to get started on some alterations for myself and finish alterations on a dress for a friend of mine -- I really hate alterations).

So, tomorrow I get to head off to JoAnn's and pick up some 4th of July fabric. Suffice it to say, since I don't really care for JoAnn's, I've been tossing the flyers in the recycling bin without cracking the first page. Hopefully there is a good sale on the holiday fabric. Then on Sunday,while hubby and his friend are building a fence, I'll get the outfit cut out. I'm so excited.

I'll probably start the actual sewing on the 29th and finish up on the 30th since I'm off work due to the premier of Eclipse. Yes, I said it. The premier of Eclipse. A friend and I will be heading off to the theater on the 29th to catch the triple feature. Twilight starts at 6:30 p.m., then we watch New Moon and then, at 12:01 a.m., Eclipse. It will be nice to just go to the theater, hang out with a friend and watch movies knowing that I don't have to be anywhere or do anything. Just relax. I've even been avoiding the previews so I can be surprised. We did the double-feature thing for New Moon and had a really good time.

So, stand by for a peek at the fabric and pattern. I'll have to sew like the wind since this outfit has to go to the Seattle area. Talk about a great summer project!

Greetings from the Great Beyond

Hi all! My, my, my, time really does move quickly. I can't believe I haven't done a post since April. It certainly doesn't feel like 2 months have gone by. Of course, I do have a very good reason for not doing a post -- no sewing. I just haven't felt like it. Hopefully this isn't another one of my 7 year droughts. I don't think so though.

So, what have I been doing? Adjusting to the new job for one thing. I'm still wiped out when I get home. Plus I've really been enjoying my summer reading list. Talk about a big stack of books. All series. Let's see, I've read all of Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse, Aurora Teagardon and Harper Connelly books; MaryJanice Davidson's Queen Betsy and Fred the Mermaid books (also Derek's Bane - love those weres). Now I'm reading Katie MacAlister's books. Aisling Grey, Guardian series to be following by the Silver Dragon series, to be followed by either Richelle Mead's succubus series or Mark Henry's snarky Zombies. Then I'll move on to the coup de gras - Laurelle K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series and Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series. I also have some books that fall under the young adult genre to read. As you can see, all Urban Fantasy books and nothing to taxing for my brain in all this heat. I also snapped up a couple of classics to read again - Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Bram Stoker's Dracula. When I'm not reading, I lay back and enjoy True Blood (I just started season 2 - I have to say I love the way the series takes the characters in different directions than the book - so much fun).

So, in a nutshell, I've been doing whatever the heck I want to do. Yes, I still have the same sewing projects to complete before I contemplate anything new, but I'm not feeling a sense of urgency, which is a very good thing. Although, I am having a problem finding floral a-line skirts a la Liz Claiborne, so I will probably hit the needles soon.

Until then, I plan to continue to enjoy my summer reading and complaining about the heat. (So much better than complaining about the cold).

Well, I'm off to do a food bank delivery.

Give Me Liberty (and while you're at it, give me Old Navy too!)

Although we are still hard at work spring cleaning and my sewing room resembles Chernoble, I thought I'd drop in to say hello. This time, I thought I'd show you one of my Liberty of London dresses from Target.

I really do like this dress. It is made of polyester (and one of the dresses that provoked such Targety-controversy). I didn't take a picture of the back, but it is incredibly cute and strappy and as such, required a strapless bra. I think the thing I liked best about this dress was the fact that it came out of the closet unwrinkled. Yay!! Talk about ready to wear.

I really like the front detail on the dress. Look at these knife pleats (I haven't washed this dress yet. It will be interesting to see if these pleats remain as sharp after having been tossed around in the dryer):

In my opinion, this line was well made with a lot of attention to detail. Not only did they use covered buttons, but they made sure that the seams matched up.

I am so impressed with this matching along the zipper. I struggle so much with this and bam! they do it in a factory for a dress that has a $29.99 price point! (which means, other low cost retailers, that attention to detail can and should be the standard and not the exception to the rule.)

This dress is also lined and I really like the way they thought about the lining. Rather than your standard acetate lining, they used a poly chiffon.

Look, bust darts!

So, how did I make this dress work appropriate, you ask? Why, with the help of Old Navy!

I just adore these cropped cardis. They are sure to be a summer staple in this house. Hopefully they are up for the challenge of repeated washings! (sorry about the crappy picture -- as you can see, my sweater is hung up on my strapless and yes, I fussed with it all day. It's a bra fit issue rather than a wardrobe issue -- going to have to suck it up and buy a new one in the proper size.) I topped it all off with a broach that belonged to my grandmother.

Why the broach? Because I wanted to make sure that the attention was drawn upward rather that remaining at the waistline, although they did an excellent job with the placement of the sash. I think it worked since I got quite a few compliments on the pin.

So, that's it. The inside of a Target Liberty of London dress. Well made sirs. Well made indeed.

A Pear Shape (or Vogue Triangle) in a Bias Cut Dress

About this post: Rather than mindlessly sewing, which is what I usually do, I decided to spend some time researching the fit and flow of clothes in my closet. Due to the limited amount of time I have to sew, I thought it would be best to know where I'm going before I begin the next leg of this journey. Well, that and the fact that 90% of what I made last year ended up in the donation bin.

When it comes to body shape, I am a pear. Or a triangle. Or an "A". It all depends on who you ask. In the end, it all means one thing -- my hips are wider than my shoulders. Not only that, my shape comes complete with luggage in the form of saddlebags (Please someone, give it another name -- I keep picturing Harleys. Wait saddlebags on a Harley are not only a sexy addition, they also mean that it's time to hit the road for adventure. Saddlebags it is.). This body configuration makes is very difficult to wear anything that is cut on the bias. If you are a pear with saddlebags, you know what I mean. Skirts or dresses on the bias tend do mean things to me, such as:

pointing to my hips. I mean, really pointing to my hips.
making me look like a mermaid, in a very "not good" way.
making me look like an ice cream cone, in particular, a sugar cone.
hitching up when I walk. What I mean is the skirt portion will ride up in the back and then bag right above the hiney zone. (This is not a pretty.)

So, I avoid bias cuts. They just don't work. For fun, I tried a bias cut mixed media skirt from Coldwater Creek. When I stopped laughing, I took it off. It was one hot mess.

Enter this dress from Talbots.

Made of a linen-look cotton, it is cut on the bias. The shape of the dress is A-line. Sans belt (which I decided to tie in an obi-like fashion due to the fact that I do not like the way I look in fabric tie belts), it is a relatively shapeless sack despite the darts. But one thing it does have is pockets! In seam pockets! That makes me happy.

As you can see, this dress is not clinging where it shouldn't cling. This is a very good thing. It is also lined with white cotton batiste. The only issue I have with this dress is the fact that the lining is also cut on the bias. Since it's close to the body, I could feel a little hitching action while I moved about during the day. I realized, much later, that one of the anchor thread strings had come undone. Given the fabric's loose weave, it's not surprising. Before I wear this dress again, I plan to re-achor the lining using small buttons on the fabric side to keep it from slipping through the weave again. I did learn that unless this lining is anchored, it will end up around my hips because, like I said, a bias cut is generally unkind to my body type, especially given the amount of moving I do during any given work day.

Despite the lining, the fabric still hand a tendency to bag around the knees, but after moving about a bit, the fabric did recover. An added bonus -- soft wrinkling as opposed to those harsh sitting wrinkles.

How I Made This Dress Work Appropriate

I'll start off by saying I'm "old school." I do not believe bare shoulders are a good match for a corporate environment. Plus, I work in A/C. So, to make this dress more appropriate for work, I donned this cardigan from Macy's:

This cardi is pretty busy with it's flowers, that I kept it simple with the jewelry. Just a pink leaf print bracelet that I adore.

I became very fascinated with the embellished sweaters this past winter season and decided, after much deliberation, that I could add them to my wardrobe and still wear them as if they were a classic garment. I had planned on refashioning an existing sweater when I realized that I didn't know how it was done.

As you can see, the flowers are just cut out of fabric and left to ravel at will. This particular sweater has french knots (something I could never stand to do when I was cross-stitching. It's a very pretty effect. Rather than tie off each thread (which is something I would do), it is done with long strands of thread which make an interesting map on the inside of the sweater. (Note to self: be careful not to snag the threads on the inside).

This dress makes interesting use of topstitching in a way that never occurred to me (not sure why). For instance topstitched darts and center seam. It really makes the dress more interesting so I'm going to file it in my memory banks for future reference.

All in all, I really like this dress and, of course, I love the sweater. The belt stayed nicely tied all day, which is quite unusual. I can't say that I stayed cool all day because I didn't and don't expect to be cool during summer days. The reason -- shapewear. I refused to be parted with my beloved shapewear now that I've gotten used to wearing it. So, yes, between my foundation garments and sweater I was hot when I went outside. The flip side of that, however, is the fact that I work in an air-conditioned building that I truly thinks that sub-zero is an acceptable temperature. This ensemble was adequate for the inside temperatures although I think, come July, this sweater will spend a lot of time on the hanger in my closet and only to come out to play on Sundays for church (yeah -- you can hang meat in our church in summer).

And now, for my parting shot, my shoes. I really, really like shoes because, for me, this is a neutral colored shoe. (See Stacy and Clinton, I've been listening!)

About Fashion

When I was asked to write about what fashion means to me, the first thing that came to mind was: Fashion is Spinach. I realized, of course, that this is not an answer, so before I began this post, I decided to look at Wikipedia's definition of fashion and here's what it had to say:

Fashion, a general term for the style and custom prevalent at a given time, in its most common usage refers to costume or clothing style.

The more technical term, costume, has become so linked in the public eye with the term "fashion" that the more general term "costume" has in popular use mostly been relegated to special senses like fancy dress or masquerade wear, while the term "fashion" means clothing generally, and the study of it.

Interesting definition. Quite general, in fact.

So, what does it mean to me? First and foremost, it means choice. Fashion is something that I can chose to accept or not accept. I can take some of it and leave the rest. It's one of those areas of life, where I have control.

Because I dress according to mood, fashion is the vehicle I use to express myself. Every item I put on my body is there for a reason and that reason is generally only known to me. My own little secret. So powerful, these decisions.

Fashion forms the basis for my personal style. With so many choices, I can pick and choose what I want to put on my body, and when I feel that the choices offered by retail do not suit me ... I sew.
It's a beautiful thing.

Recently, I have realized that I am touched by fashion every day, in fact, several times a day...and each time I have a choice. I can choose to be fashionable (as in trendy) or I can rebel against conventional fashion and go for something that tells the world that I'm not terribly interested in its opinions.

Or maybe, I just want to show that I'm a part of a community.

Being anti-fashion is a style that I adopt for many occasions. Sometimes I choose my clothes simply for their shock value.

Sometimes I'm in a good mood and want to convey how much fun I've having or wish to have any particular day.

Perhaps I want comfort so I adopt a practical look that is still polished, but allows me to move around during the day. I have a work look. I have a weekend look. Sometimes that weekend look consists of pajamas. And recently, on the days that I just don't want to face the world and want to drape myself in black, I do the opposite. Pick happy colors and fun accessories because I don't actually want to share that outlook with the world. Or maybe I just want to cheer myself up.

You see, fashion allows me to tell you about the many facets of me. Unless you see me everyday, you only get a part of the story. The part I wish to tell you. See me often enough and you learn that I am a bit of a free spirit, that there is an inner bohemian that lives within me. You see the punk rock influence from my younger days and see that much of the rebellion again the "establishment" is still there. You'll learn that I love classic clothing and have an appreciation for the shapes of the 50s and 60s.

You'll wonder when I'm going to leave on safari and that I love textiles. You'll see that I don't always follow the rules and, very often, will break them just because I can.

You will see a conservative women who seeks to control her environment and you'll see a woman that thrives in chaos. You'll wonder if this is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius or if I just returned from a Depeche Mode concert. You'll guess about my age and wonder if I own a pair of sensible shoes.

You'll see so my costume jewerly that you'll wonder where I store it. You'll see over-the-top vintage jewelry and funky belts and wonder where I get the guts to wear them.

Fashion allows me to put things in my closet that I love. It allows me to nurture my inner child who still loves to play dress up--only now I play in my own closet. Fashion provides a place for me to express the freedom I desire inside my heart. It allows me to survive in a corporate world because every day when I prepare for work, I make sure that one item on my body (whether you can see it or not) reflects the real me and not the me that has a dress code to observe. Fashion allows me, at my age, to continue to play.

You see, I'm unique, just like you. I'm complicated, just like you. And I use fashion to speak to the world and the message is whatever I desire it to be that day. It may mean everything or it may mean nothing to me. Just know that it's deliberate because it's one of the few things where I can exercise my choice and not be overruled by anyone else. In the end it's simply this: my body, my story, my decisions.

And on some days, like today, my message was specific:

Welcome Spring. Winter... go away!
Yes, I am your reader for Mass today.
Dear Liberty of London and Target -- no matter how big you make those black buttons, I'm still not wearing black shoes!

Hi Y'all!

Hi everyone. I thought I'd check in since it's been a while. I'm still hard at work in my sewing room doing a little at a time. Rather than start with the big things (fabric), I started with the little things (notions and doodads). Now I'm doing patterns. What an experience this has been and where the hell did all these patterns come from? Okay, I know the answer to that, but as I go through them, I'm amazed by how many my mom sent me and how many are at odds with my current style. At first I was worried that I was going to have problems weeding them down -- it seemed like more were going in the keep stack then the donate stack. Finally that tide has begun to change now that I've been through my Hot Patterns and realize that they are not only amazing, but that they are wonderfully classic. So, with a renewed mind, I'm going through a second time and weeding some more. I decided that, given the time I have to devote to sewing, I really don't need hundreds of patterns laying around, especially if those patterns are trendy. Thanks to the time I've spend in fitting rooms during the last several months, I've really gotten an idea of what looks good on me and what makes me feel fabulous when I'm wearing it. So if a pattern doesn't make me say "wow!", then it's out of here. 3 bags and counting -- talk about excess. We won't even speak of the amount of elastic I have. I know how that got that way too...

Me: I just came back from the store. I ran out of elastic so I had to buy some until my order comes in.

Mom: You need elastic?

Me: No, I have it now.

1 week later:

Mom: I just sent you some elastic.

Me: (silence)

So, I've gone through and gotten rid of cheap elastic that has no chance of standing the test of time, but I still have quite a bit simply because I've removed the elastic from their spools.

Well folks, I'd better get back to work.

Weekend Musings

Happy Sunday everyone!

While I never had my drink on Friday, (too lazy to go and get the bottle from its living space in a dark corner) I did enjoy some M&M's and a bottle of Propel. It seemed to do the trick. I am, however, really beginning to get in the mood for sewing. Must be all the pretty colors at the stores.

Yesterday, I went outside and actually broke into a sweat when going out to get my copy of New Moon! Yay on both accounts! Of course, today it's raining, which will usher in colder temperatures, but I'll take what I can get. Actually, the minute I saw the real rain on the way, I took my car out for a ride so it could get a nice wash in the rain. It was very dusty from the parking lot I've been using at work (yes, I've been driving in lately) and needed a rinse. Now I'm just relaxing and watching Total Recall.

After church, the morning, I paid a visit to Target. I amused myself by trying on some dresses and skirts - nothing really fit very well and not worth my time to alter, so I moved on to the real reason for my visit. Organization. I, once again, visited the Liberty of London section because I really liked the organization bins

the maynard jars

and the prep bowls.

They will look wonderful on the shelves of my white bookshelf and will make the room extra cheery. (And for good measure, a piggy bank for a fun way to save my pennies and a picure frame).

So yes, I'm really starting to get into the mood to sew, but first things first, I have to make the room pretty. After I laze about a bit that is..... One thing at a time and all, you know. (I really am getting good at this doing less thing. Once task at a time instead of trying to do it all at one time. Wonder why I didn't think of this before?)

I Know I Said I Was Going to Do a Post Today But....

Life happened -- at work. And right along with life came stress, anxiety and a panic attack. Oh yeah, did I add feelings of inferiority? Yeah, life. Needless to say I dealt with said life to the best of my ability, came home, did some things, played with my Liberty dresses and am now going to enjoy a cocktail. Oh, who am I kidding -- I'm having a "stiff belt."

Hopefully, the answer to that question is yes. I know I want to see one and that's why I've volunteered to help spread the word about a new publication that's trying to get off the ground. A magazine about real women, what we wear, how we shop for our clothing and yes, even make them ourselves. A magazine that includes tips about dressing for your body type written by women that have learned and are learing through trial and error and that shop where and how you shop -- sales, thrift stores, refashions and sewing from scratch. Sound interesting? If so, pop on over to Basse Mode and read all about it. Then if you believe this is a good thing, please spread the word, via blog, e-mail or talking to your friends. You can also grab the button to place on your blog and if you're really feeling froggy -- sign up and get involved.

Why would I do this? Because I think it's important. I know how hard it is when you love looking your best, but aren't really sure how to get there...you know, that road to discovery your personal style and learning to love yourself and accept your body, wobbly parts and all. I know I love fashion magazines, but am always disappointed when all I see are clothes that are not practical for my lifestyle. So, yeah, I'm in and have volunteered to share my personal style and how I shop on a budget.

On the same note, I will begin blogging my daily outfits soon, but will be doing this on another blog so that I can keep this one on subject. I can't tell you how amazing my journey has been toward self-acceptance, body image and personal style thus far. So, once I get that set up, I'll put a link here so that those of you who are interested, can find my daily outfits over there and my sewing projects here.

Tomorrow, I plan to show you the inside of my Liberty of London for Target dresses. I tried them on again this morning so I could see what, if anything, needed to be tweaked (such as sewing down the pleats in the back of the sheath so they don't pooch out. I wonder if a petite would have been a better choice for me, although I do like the fit of the misses size). I have to tell you, I was impressed when I started looking at them. Very nice on the inside, and they used a technique on the lining of the peacock dress that I want to use myself. Let's just say, they did a better job of matching the seams for the invisible zip than I've ever done. So jealous. I've also been tracking my order like a maniac. I ordered on Sunday and my box left Jacksonville at 4:00 a.m. today, so I should have it tomorrow. Take that Talbots!

On Liberty of London for Target

Y'all know from my prior post that I'm loving the Target Liberty of London line. I like it so much, that I've actually found myself interested in the opinion of others about the line -- so much so that I've been reading the blogs and frankly, I'm a little confused about the expectations. It seems that lot of folks think that a Liberty of London collaboration with Target was supposed to translated into investments pieces (translation: Liberty's cotton lawn) at Target prices. Ain't gonna happen folks. Most of the complaining is about the use of polyester in the women's clothing. I guess I'm just a nerd, but folks, I did my research prior to running out to purchase from this line so I knew what to expect and I knew how it came to be.

So, for those who haven't ventured out, I say this: This is not a Liberty of London line per se. Liberty leased the prints to Target (around 25); Target, in turn, picked out fabrics and manufactured the clothing. The collaboration makes sense for both companies. For Liberty -- it gets their name out to a broader customer base. The company is struggling financially and they want to save the company. And, let’s face it…most of us working Joes can't afford true Liberty of London dresses. I don't know about you, but I do not have $1,000 to spend on a dress. Just can't do it. So, why would you expect to find that same quality dress at Target? Doesn't make sense. So, yeah, there's a lot of bitching and moaning about the fact that they didn't use Liberty's cotton lawn, but the use of that fabric would have priced these garments at prices your wouldn't expect to see at Target and Target, my friends, knows their customer base.

I guess I'm just flabbergasted that people actually expected to find investment pieces at Target. Hello!!!! It's Target. They sell trendy items for low prices. I know I don't see them as an investment, I see them as fun. A way to enjoy bold prints and fun colors at low prices. Period. End of story. Yes, they used poly chiffon for a lot of the dresses. They chose it because those particular designs are meant to be drapey. Sure, I would have preferred silk chiffon, but silk chiffon is more costly than polyester and would have lead to a much more expensive price point.

Now y'all know that I think cotton is king. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Cotton is king. Linen rocks. Especially in Florida, in summer, when it's hot as hell. That being said, I went for the polyester summer dresses. Why? Because I liked them and believe that I'll be reasonably cool in them (no sleeves). I also like the fact that these dresses can be washed, dried and hung in the closet. Like I said before, I prefer cotton and linen, but cotton and linen have to be ironed and I have learned that I need to be realistic about the amount of time I have available to me.

Now, I realize that this just turned into a rant, but I just don't understand the expectations of some people. It’s that something for nothing mentality that drives me to drink. You like it? Fine. Buy it. You don't? Then don't. You want Liberty's cotton lawn fabric -- they have website and you can purchase a dress directly from the company. Better yet, check out Ebay for Liberty of London garments (you'll have to weed through all of the LoL Target listings and don't let me get started on those folks. Posting the items for 2-3 times the retail price! It's disgusting.) Or you can do what I did -- go to Target with your perspective firmly in place and remember where you are shopping. Target! Not Barney's -- Target. Once you have this thought firmly in place, enjoy yourself. The collection is meant to be fun with an inexpensive price point. You aren't making an investment in a fine piece of fashion, you're buying mass produced clothes from a discount retailer. No more. No less.

Has it Really Been This Long?

I've been told it's time for me to check in, so here I am ... checking in.

Right now I'm in Liberty of London for Target recovery. Yes, I got a little obsessed about this collection. You see, I have a 2 yard piece of Liberty of London fabric that I am afraid to cut into for fear of ruining it. Then I saw the ads for the Target line. I was so blown away by the sheath, bucket hat and trench, that I became deterimined to get those items from Target. I mean a LoL print sheath for $34.99? The entire dress for the price of one yard of fabric? I am so in! So, I put it on my calendar a couple of months ago so I wouldn't forget (like that was going to happen). Well, I started crusing the net on Saturday night, but I was tired so I went to bed before the site went live. I was up early on Sunday because my dogs can't tell time and don't give a crap about Daylight Savings time. I made myself a cup of coffee and logged on. I was able to click my way to the dress, sheath and a couple of other dresses, but the hat? Nope. It was out of stock. What the? It was just there a moment ago. So, I started checking availability at my local store. I was on a mission you know. I dislike making hats. At any rate, they had a "limited supply" of hats, so I decided to go to the store. I was there by 7:58 a.m. Me and one other woman. Thankfully, she was at the door by the food, so I wasn't going to have to race her to the accessories. I, of course, parked by the door closest to the accessories. So, first one in that door and there was the hat. All one of them. Mine!. Then I proceeded to the clothes. I realized as I was walking arond that my Target put out their merchandise on Saturday. C'est la vie.... I started tossing dresses in the cart like they were free, all the while guarding the LoL area, and proceeded to the dressing room. The attendant gave me a funny look when I tried to get the cart as close to the door as I could. She suggested the first fitting room. Yeah, I was in there listening. If I heard someone go near that cart.... Let's just say it would be very bad (okay, this sounds crazy, but I've had several carts of stuff "stolen" in Target and Walmart -- these people mean business around here). Several dresses later, I walked out with these two.

I really hesitated with the Isis print dress. It's so impractical, and yet ethreal. I love peacock feathers and have been looking for a peacock print for some time. I actually tried this dress on twice before I decided t go for it. I'm not even going to wait for a special occasion to wear it. I think it will be a lot of fun to put this one just to feel special. It's polyester, so washer, dryer, hang up... perfect for summer!

I took a quick run by the men's section, but they didn't have that merchandise in yet. Hmmph. So, I went to bedding and got my quilt and shams.

I love, love, love it. It's light weight, which is perfect for 3 Florida seasons. I plan to have this for a very long time.

I looked around at all of the goodies -- such pretties: lamp shades (loved these!!), pillows (really want the pillows), storage boxes (I intended to get some boxes, but alas, they were too small for my use - I wanted them for pattern storage), the piggy bank was cute (no use for that), acrylic boxes, picture frames.... well you get the picture. They had everything but the bike (I love that bike! Too bad the drivers are so ridiculous here -- bike riding is actually an extrme sport). I pondered a lot of things and put back several things because I needed the quilt and was on a budget with my gift cash (thanks mom!!). After the cashiers studied my purchases and made sure they knew where to go after break, I treaded myself to Starbucks and went home to put the quilt on the bed. I have to tell you, I didn't realize the our scratchy army-like blanket was actually robbing us of sleep. Probably because everytime it touched the skin it felt like sandpaper. Hubby was so happy to get a quilt. Trust me, that nasty blanket was in the trash post haste. Of course, he asked me why I didn't get a quilt two months ago, after the dogs finished eating the comforter. I gently reminded him that I generally dislike the bedding at the stores and the Liberty quilt was the first one I've ever really loved. So, we had to wait. I still haven't finished the Amy Butler coverlet -- the thought of manipulating all the fabric makes me really ill, but I'd better finish it soon otherwise it will be too hot to work with it. Once it's finished, it goes into the closet to wait for next winter. But my Liberty quilt -- I smile every time I look at it -- this is a very good thing. We snuggled under that quilt and didn't movefor the rest of the day. It was very hard to get out of bed for work today -- I really wanted to cuddle under that quilt. Sigh.

I tried to like the other bags, but I just don't. When I heard about this, I was all ears. I had a billboard bag years ago (hubby asked me to get rid of it because I carried it so much it looked like crap) and love it like crazy, so I'm very excited about this bag. It also seems that they did the same with the Anna Sui billboards, so I'm going to save my pennies and get one of those too! This one is definitely worth that wait!! So, that's my Liberty of London story. I heard that Target is going to re-stock, so I'm going to save up for the lamps and pillows. Can you believe I'd do all this so I don't have to cut my LoL fabric? I think I may just use my fabric for wall art for a while. It seems like a good compromise for the time being. (I saw some other adorable items at Target, but alas, not part of my shopping plan!)

A little extreme, I admit, but I love this fabric and until I feel comfortable enough to sew it without making huge errors, I'm going to simply enjoy my easy care Target dresses. (I know a lot of ladies were very disappointed that they didn't use cotton, but truthfully, I don't like to iron my casual summer clothes, so no-iron styles work for me. I'm not one of those "wear cotton clothing" straight out of the dryer person -- it's just too wrinkly), save my money for my lamps and pillows and hang my fabric on the wall, uncut, as art. I'll also be keeping my fingers crossed and hope that these two collaberate again in the future.

Sadly, I haven't been sewing, but I did do a little refashioning and made a really cool graphic t-shirt. As soon as I get my camera to cooperate, I'll post the photo.

Spring cleaning update: The closet's done. That's it. The closet. It's great though - I worked on it a little at a time and tried on lots of clothes. We won't talk about howmany things didn't make the cut. Live and learn, I say. Hopefully, I'll make better fabric choices in the future. My feelings about my sewing room can be summed up in one word: "Really?" Yeah, it's that bad. I'm not even sure why I'm even holding on to some of that stuff. There will be a major overhaul in that room.

Last item of note: I do not believe that the infection in my jaw bone is gone, so I'll be calling my dentist tomorrow. The edodontist did not want the crown to go on until the infection is clear so......

As soon as hubby is clear to return to work, the sewing will begin again. As it stands now, we are only 10 days post surgery. 20 more to go before another trip to the surgeon. He's not even allowed to drive. Wow.

Well, that's all folks. I'm off to scrounge up some grub and try to convince myself to do a task today before I retire for the evening. Stupid spring cleaning. At least my quilt will be waiting for me.

On Planning to Sew

I confess that I still feel no desire to sew for myself. It seems I have either (a) lost my mojo or (b) am totally over myself. I suspect it's a little of both. I still have high hopes for the future. My mom is ready to head home -- she's picked the end of the month for her departure. Hubby's surgery -- the first week of March. That means I have about a week of declutter time before the nurturing begins. I image that it's going to take a month of Sunday's to whip this nest together (including the sewing room) before I can truly begin. I still plan to do home dec sewing first and then see how I feel after that. Perhaps some kid sewing is what the doctor ordered -- or maybe it's time to finish all the UFO's I've left lying around. Here it is February and I still haven't finished projects I started in June! (That sounds like me).

Until that time, I've decided to ramble on -- about fashion, closet management, dressing my shape and clothes in general. I just don't have anything else going on in the sewing department at this time and, for some reason, my desire to blog has returned. I still don't read many, but I imagine I'll be searching for inspiration soon enough. Perhaps I'll even start another blog a la "What I wore today" in order to inventory my closet so I can sew with a purpose instead of my usual helter-skelter style. Rest assured, there will be less sewing output this year. Quality over quantity. I hope.

Retail, I do owe you an apology. It's not easy to admit, but it's true. You see, I was thoroughly convinced that you had nothing for me. Turns out, you did. You see, I was looking in all the wrong places. Brick and mortar stores and, well, it turns out that the stores in my neck of the woods really don't take me into consideration when picking their clothing. But you, online retailers, do. Like you, Coldwater Creek. I do believe I cannot stand your brick and mortar store. It really does make me want to go shopping for my grandmother. But your online store? Shut up! It's amazing. Clothes that not only fit well, but are of the quality that I desire. Dresses that hit right at or below the knee, runching where I need it, great blazers with 3/4 sleeves, princess seams, gentle shaping and fine details. Jeans that fit me and surplice necklines. Don't even get me started on the accessories. And you, Talbots. Bi-stretch pants, pencil skirts, gorgeous cardigans and wonderful a-line, classic dresses. Oh yes, you have accessories as well and some really fine shoes. And don't think I've left you out JC Penney. You are pants central with those lovely modern fit, slim legged trousers. And Macy's? I can't leave you out of the mix -- your sweaters are TDF -- who knew that you cornered the market on V-necked cardigans? It's like you knew that v-necks are my very best friends. And no, Casual Living USA, I did not forget you. You are catalog all the way with a warehouse that I can drive to in 45 minutes, a place that tells me you mailed something and I get it the next day! I always wondered where all the knits were hiding and you had them -- it's like Ross without the searching. V-necks, surplice neck lines, runching to hide the bumps and yes, some flowing boho chic dresses with deep v-necks and full skirts without the bulk. You have given me lessons in fabric choices for summer (cotton voile -- yes; quilting cottons - no.) Yes, you all have shown me the light. So what if I have to try on in the comfort of my home. And yes, it does require some returns, but some of you have made that easy by allowing catalog returns at your stores. Target, Walmart -- I won't leave you out. Target, you are da bomb when it comes to bangles and bobbles (you too Kohl's) and, lest I forget, Target you do have some great t-shirts this season. Walmart, I've spent a lot of years hating you, but the ice is melting and probably will continue to melt if you keep working with the people like Norma Kamali and Max Azria. (Oh, and Kohl's? Great shoes!!)

So, you see retail, I do owe you an apology. I assumed that because I couldn't find anything in store, I couldn't find anything at all. So not true! I just had to look in cyberspace. And, truthfully, that doesn't bother me one bit. I love the fact that there are online Outlets and your special sales--50, 60, 70, 75% off the outlet prices? Well, you are definitely speaking my language. Quality at a price that fits my budget? Get outta here. Especially you CWC -- your sales rock the house. Your $79.95 jeans for $11.99? Sign me up. And JCP - you taught me something. You taught me that I do not match the definition of curvy in the way that you definite it. The fact that I do not need that extra volume in my trousers was news to me. Thank you. I also learned that I will never find a pair of trousers or jeans that will fit me everywhere. Chances are, I am going to have to content myself with fitting hips and thighs and then taking them to a tailor (I do not have the stomach to do the work myself) to have the waist nipped in. You also taught me about rises and the fact that a low rise fit is actually a natural waist fit on me. Who knew? Oh, and lest I forget, you did hip me to the fact that if I get my trousers in the tall length, I can pair them with heels (some hemming involved) because the regular length will have me in flats (or kitten heels if the hem is let out). But you CWC, are the opposite of this logic. With you, the regular size allows me to put on heels with no length adjustment. Yay!!

So, yeah, retail. I owe you an apology. All along I assumed you were ignoring me, but instead, you were playing hide and seek. Guess what -- tag, your it!!

It's Been Such a Long Time

Wow. I can't believe how long it's been since my last post. And no, I haven't been sewing. I haven't been reading blogs either. What I have been doing is dealing with dental "stuff." "Stuff" as in a tooth ache that started at the back of my mouth and found it's way to one tooth. When I realized it wasn't going to get better, I went to the dentist. He said mean things -- "you need a root canal." So, off to the edodontist. He said meaner things "are you taking any meds?" "No, why?" "Because you have an infection and that infection has made it's way to your jaw bone." Great. So, I get a root canal and a prescription for what seemed like 200 penicillin pills. Ick. Penicillin, after about 4 days, makes me sick. I had to take it for a little over a week. Sick, sick, sick. So now, I've finished taking them (earlier this week) and the mental fog is finally lifting. Next step is a crown and then I'm done with dental meanies for a while. As for sewing -- no, not a stitch. I have been, however, watching "how to dress yourself" shows with wild abandon. The next step for me is not to sew, but instead, to go through my closet, try on every piece of clothing and donate anything that doesn't flatter me. I'll also be weeding out those sewing mistakes. In addition, I really have to de-clutter. It's scary in my sewing room. Then and only then, will I begin to sew -- with an actual plan. I plan on taking lots of chances, but in the end, if it doesn't flatter my figure, I'll chock it up to experience, donate the garment and move on. It's my "you don't know until you try" plan for 2010. Now, let's see if I can actually stick to that plan.

Feathering My Nest in a Cold Birdcage

Brrr. Hello from sunny but incredibly cold Florida. It' s 28 degrees outside this morning, which classifies this day as "stupid cold." But given a choice of cold and gray and cold and sunny, I'm going for cold and sunny. Even if these temperatures are stupid.

Yesterday I continued feathering my nest by moving onto the mitered corners. Look -- pretty huh?
I thought I would show you Amy's method for mitering corners on this project lest you think I'm clever. She really made it quite easy. First a little press.
Then fold the first corner to a 45 degree angle (remember to turn the picture though).
My next step was to check the angle of my first corner.
Then I ironed (note: Amy's patterns rarely mention the iron, but trust me...iron and then iron again).
Fold that piece out of the way to expose the second side that needs mitering.
Fold it down 45 degrees

As you can see, the design of the coverlet is such that you can't get this part wrong.
Here's what it looks like once you fold back those corners to 45 degree angles.

And here's the front. Nice huh?
Okay, enough of that. For the batting layer, I decided to use up the "what was I thinking" fleece that's been hanging around for eons.
I didn't have enough of any one piece
so I just sewed them together patchwork style.
After this I proceeded out to the garage where it was a toasty 36 degrees, laid down newspaper and then proceeded to crack the garage door.
I laid out my "batting."
and place my coverlet front on top of it. Then I got to work on getting these pieces ready for basting. Note: quilting purists stop reading. When I say basting, I mean non-traditional basting. It was (a) too cold in the garage for pinning or sewing and (b) the concrete floor is really hard.
I got out my basting equipment and got to work.
and voila -- a basted coverlet top. After this point, I got out my chaco-pen and ruler and marked the sewing lines. No, I wasn't too accurate. It was too cold for that nonsense -- I used the "eyeball" technique.
Finally I was able to roll up my coverlet, toss the newspapers in the recycle bucket and go back in the house.
I even managed to finish the simple quilting last night, which is just lines -- horizontal and vertical - my kind of quilting. Today I move on to the backing and then putting the entire thing together -- after I clip some threads of course.

Feather Your Nest - My First Project of the New Year (Well Actually the Second)

sHappy New Year everyone! It's a Festivus miracle. I've started my first (well second) project of the new year. The first project, a skirt, was a complete dog. It was a UFO from last year and should have stayed as such. Ah well, live and learn.

The second project, Amy Butler's Feather Your Nest, has been born of necessity. You see, my crazy dogs decided to eat the really cheap comforter that is on the bed. Yes, you read that right -- eat it. All it took was a breach of the poorly sewn squares for them to discover that the comforter was filled with cheap batting that resembles.... fiberfill. Yep, a gigantic dog toy. Ah well, it was gross and needed to be replaced, much like everything made of cloth in my home. So, I started on a new quilt that has minimal quilting (thank you Amy!!)
For my fabric I chose Nigela which is a home dec weight fabric from Ms. Butler herself. I was amazed when picking fabrics to discover that my gigantic stash of Nigela was quite depleted. I do have enough, however, to complete my quilt. This really is quite simple to make -- the top consists of two large blocks of fabric (I didn't have enough of any one fabric to do this, so I made four blocks using four fabrics -- so quilty). The borders are simply long strips, one on each side (again, not enough fabric, so two strips per side -- I'm quilting now!!).
I have one more side strip to sew on and then it's time to miter the corners (groan!). The back of the quilt will actually be one solid color, which is, again, a Festivus miracle. And for my batting? Fleece in a goofy Christmas print that will never get used for anything else (one of those "what was a I thinking? purchases). Once I finish this one, I plan to make another out of quilting cotton in a biker motif. And yeah, I'm using small stitches to hold this thing together.

And now on to other business:

I've been thinking a lot about my plans for 2010, sewing and otherwise. "Resolutions" do not really work for me, so I don't make them. Looking back on 2009, I realize that I spent the year flitting from one thing to the next. This is what happens when you don't have a plan. So, I decided 2010 would be spent doing LESS. That's it. That's the big one.

So, what do I mean by less. I realize that I'm a sucker for busyness. It's stupid, but true. So, LESS. Less spending. Less "doing". Less accumulation. Less pride. Yes, I said it, less pride. It's true. You see, I realize that it was pride that made me decide 3 years ago that retail was evil and I should only wear clothing that I made myself. What I didn't consider was the fact that I work a full time job and commute. Yeah, I made a lot of stuff last year, but it certainly wasn't enough to fill a closet when the other things were wearing out just as quickly due to hard use. The only result of trying to do it all was a house badly neglected that is now driving me insane. So, I took a very large slice of humble pie and a incredibly generous gift of Coldwater Creek and got myself some work clothes. Thanks to their end of season clearance (I was using a 70% code while the site was still at 60% off), I was able to put together a pretty decent work wardrobe and get rid of some of this pressure. Yes, I now have a decent wardrobe that fits my position in a corporate environment and am going to return to professional dress -- still business casual without all the casual, that reflects my age.

I still can't believe I found clothes that fit me and are appropriate for my profession. Where has Coldwater Creek been all these years? Of course, I do owe a debt of gratitude to sewing for making this all possible. You see, I was able to take my knowledge of fabric and put it to good use since I was shopping online. I also approached that size chart without fear. I may not know my retail size, but I certainly know my measurements! (the real ones, not the pretend measurements). Worked like a charm. I got clothes that fit and fit well, with beautiful princess seaming where needed and lovely fabrics. I got dresses with hems that end right below my knee which is where they should be on me. And get this -- pants that fit! That's right, I said pants that fit! For the first time ever! I'm going to have to tweak the waistband of the ponte knit pencil skirt that I got, but the natural waist pants? Score!!!

Now, before you give me the "tut, tut -- you signed up for Wardrobe Refashion for life" look, I'll tell you that clothes for work do not violate the pledge. Nor do specialty items (i.e. ski clothes). Sure, we are to try to make or refashion all those things, but it's not necessary. It only took me 3 years to realize that you have to have a base wardrobe before you go off on crazy adventures like trying to make all your clothes for work and play, while trying to work and play. Humble pie. But this humble pie is also going to allow me to return to sewing for play. I plan to begin this year sewing for my home. It needs help. It's neglected. The window treatments have been in place for 10 years. The pillows are flat and faded. It's time. I also want to spend some time sewing for my goddaughter. What good is a collection of Farbenmix patterns if I'm not going to use them? And yes, I'll sew for myself. But having a base wardrobe allows me to venture into new areas like lingerie.

So there you have it. A plan for 2010, with a slice of humility on the side. Nice.

Blankets a Gone Gone

It took me longer than planned, but I finished the blankets this morning and delivered them to my church. I was able to make 24 blankets with the fleece that I had stored in my sewing room closet.
I even had enough scraps on hand to make this reversible blanket
I wish I could say it was an easy job, but it wasn't. Not due to technical difficulty, but from the stand point of actually giving up fabric (isn't that stupid? I have too much, but when it comes time to part with it.... wah!!). Then I found myself thinking "this would make a good gift for so and so." (as if I don't have this year's fleece that mom sent -- stupid, huh?) But, in the end, I pushed through and delivered all of them to their intended destination.
Giving this time was challenging, but I think, in the end, that's a very good thing.

I was flitting around the net just for fun. I came across these white jeans on BananaRepublic.com. Imagine my surprise when I clicked on this close up photo:

Why does this model have crusty toes syndrome and why oh why didn't anyone notice when they posted this picture? It's bad enough that I have to look at dried, cracked heels and toes year round (with the exception of the few days (okay weeks) that it's too cold for open toe shoes in Florida), do I really need to see it in store ads too? Truly WTF??

Got Fleece?

Lots and lots and lots of it. And how does one come to have this much fleece? Years and years of accumulation that went a little like this. Every year mom visits JoAnn's on Black Friday. Every year they have fleece on sale. She buys said fleece and then sends it to me. I put it in with the fabric and plan to use it. Then I don't. Then it gets hot outside so I rotate the fabrics and the fleece ends up in the back of the closet. Then I'm too lazy to dig it out when the cold comes around again. But then again, why would I dig it out when a new box of fleece awaits me each December? Granted, a lot of these have had bits and pieces cut from them. Some are ready to become blankets with only a snip and a serge. Others will require piecing. It's no problem. I'm definitely feeling up to the task and am very happy that I had so much fleece to actually be able to make a difference in my community. Who knew that fabric could be a source of assistance to others and that my source of frustration would turn out to be a gift that I could share? Merry Christmas indeed.

Progress - Slim to None and a New Project

Suffice it to say, after three days of sporadic work on a simple stuffed animal/blanket (I like to call them binkies), I am still far from the end. Sigh. I'm cutting myself some slack through -- it's been about 15 years since I made a plush animal so....

On the flip side of that coin, after struggling with finding a way to make the holidays and especially Christmas more memorable, I now have a solution. At church today, Father P. announced that the local homeless shelters were going to open their doors tonight due to temperatures in the 40s tonight. One of them call with a special request. It seems that they don't have any blankets. Well, for years I've been complaining about the amount of fleece in my fabric collection (well, not out loud, but in my head). I have almost 3 large totes of just fleece in my closet in the sewing room that I never get an opportunity to use. Until now. Could I just go and buy blankets? Actually, no. It's not in the budget. But I can make them. Lots and lots of them with the help of my serger. So, that's the plan for this week. I'm going to ask those that are employed to kindly wait for their gifts while I turn my attention to a more immediate need in my community. I am so happy to be able to have something that reminds me that yes, Christmas is much more than presents. It's coming together as a community to help those that cannot help themselves. (I also plan to find out if they are in need of toiletries). So, if you don't hear from me for a few days, you know why.

Need I Say More?

Okay, this picture isn't entirely accurate. I don't have tons of gifts to wrap because it wasn't in the budget this year and we decided that it really wasn't necessary. I am sewing though -- making a few gifts and then calling it quits. Making lots and lots of mistakes. Something tells me that I'm going to have to move Christmas to New Year's this year.

Hallelujah! I'm Back

Well y'all, I'm back home. Got back yesterday afternoon. Thankfully, no snow in the Midwest -- just really, really cold, especially at night. As for the other states we passed through -- Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia -- they were all dreary. No sun, just clouds and drizzle. We got waylaid near Tifton, GA due to low lying dense fog, so we grabbed a hotel for the night and then drove out of the fog yesterday morning and were greeted by sunshine after we crossed back into Florida .... aaahhh.

Suffice it to say after driving 1,200 miles, I'm exhausted. Went to work today and came home just beat. So....

no sewing

no show and tell...

just sleep (oh yeah, and laundry).

Knits -The Next Chapter

Greetings crafty ladies! By the time this post actually posts, I should be back at home...sleeping.

I still have some things to show you from my first sewing burst, but lest you think I've been idle these past few weeks, here's what's next:
Most of these items are waiting for hems -- some are waiting for facings and bodices. Now that mom is in residence and since my Christmas gift to her is handmade goodies (after I measure her, of course), I will be working on these in conjunction with the other Christmas gifts that I need to make (wait until the last minute, right?). I don't mind though -- I'm undecided about the finish for most of these items, so it will give me more time to think.

Butterick 5394 and Novelty Fleece

Greetings and salutations my sewing friends. I'm on the road again and hopefully will be back in Florida tonight.

For your viewing pleasure is yet another creation from Butterick 5394. This time I made it in a novelty fleece that's been hanging out for a year in the ole' fabric collection.

I have to tell you, I was not expecting great things from this fabric. I was simply using it "because". The result, however, is marvelous. It feels so vintage inspired.

The fabric is that curly fleece -- looks like a french poodle. It's awful to work with -- sheds like nobody's business. I cut this one out in conjunction with a faux fur number and let me tell you--my sewing room looked like a chinchilla and a poodle got in a fight.
It was worth the mess though.
I plan to use this non-sweater sweater to showcase some of my grandmother's pins. I think this one will get a lot of wear -- it's very cozy and now that it's assembled -- it's stopped shedding. (whew!)

Butterick 5394 (Yes...Again)

Hi from the road! No, I'm not actively posting, but I figured I'd go ahead and schedule my posts so I can continue to show you my "stuff".

This sweater is yet another one from Butterick 5394. It is a made from a sweater knit that I got last year from Fabric.com. I went ahead and made a belt to go with it, but am unsure about belt carriers (no guarantee that I'll actually wear this belt). I'll ponder it a while longer.
And here it is sans belt. I'm hesitant to add the carriers because I don't like the look when I'm not actually wearing a belt. So you ask, what are the chances that you'll go beltless? Pretty good. The Tale of Butterick 5247, a Cardi, a Belt and Some Boots

Here I am in yesterday's outfit. The dress is Butterick 5247 and I combined it with my other cashmere cardi that I got last year from Bloomy's for an amazing price. You can't really see the print of the dress, but it's a herringbone knit from ??? I felt that all this black lacked some pizzaz, so I paired it up with a purple belt courtesy of Target and my flat boots, which I got from Kohl's last year (Simply Vera) for, yes, you guessed it, a fraction of the retail price (I still can't believe they had them in my size).
And here's the dress all by its lonesome. I will never wear it this way, but I thought I'd show it to you for good measure.

Simplicity 2560. It's a Keeper!

So, what did I wear to work yesterday, you ask? (Okay, I know you didn't ask, but .... oh whatever!)

This:

The jacket is Simplicity 2560 and the fabric is a Vera Wang knit (I think). It either came from Fabric.com or Fabricmartfabrics.com. (My brain's a little fuzzy right now.) The top is a retail number (Christmas present from mom -- I think she got it at Macy's) that gets worn twice a year if it's lucky because, until now, it didn't really "go" with anything (it's sleeveless). I think I made these trousers 3 years ago from a New Look pattern; the fabric is a poly crepe.

I have to tell you -- I love this pattern. Eventually, you'll see how much I love it. The fact that I didn't have to do any creative thinking (other than fabric choices) makes it even better. This jacket is destined to be a work horse (along with its friends that are hanging around waiting for hems). I think, with creative dressing, I can take this thing through all 4 seasons (hot, oh man it's hot, at least it's not so hot, and why isn't it hot?).

And now, dear people, I will be out of pocket for the next few days (although I'm going to go ahead and do a post or two in advance -- I'm not sure if it will work, but time will tell). I'm flying up to Illinois in order to drive a car, and my mom, back to Florida. I must be crazy. They have snow, and, from what I hear, a lot of it. Since most of our time will be on the road, I want to travel light, but my Florida wardrobe is going to require some layers in order to stay warm. Thank goodness I decided to make McCalls 5987 out of wool. (Plus, I won't have to remember to take a scarf...I will, however, have to find my gloves.) I'm cold just thinking about this crazy adventure. Imagine, a road trip in winter....

Butterick 5394 .... in a Garage -- What I Wore Yesterday

Greetings from the garage!

Here's what I wore to work yesterday:

The sweater is Butterick 5394, made from a knit boucle that I got on Ebay (yeah, I got it on Ebay) a few years ago. I have to say that I love this sweater. The shirt is one of the gaggle of Perfect T-shirts that I made earlier in the year. The trousers are from Jacque Penne (JCP) -- one of two pair of retail trousers that I own (the other pair is white) -- they are too long in the crotch (of course), but I'm too lazy to pull the waistband off and fix it.

Here's a picture of the back of the sweater (I'm really not trying to torture you with butt shots, but they are educational (for me, not you) so you can see where it hits me (remembering, of course, that I have a compact, troll like torso). Not the best look for me, but I sill like it.

That being said, I had to work to get this sweater to look like the picture. The collar was (a) extremely long and (b) floppy. At first I thought I had stretched the collar out when I was pressing the seams, but I made two sweaters like this and guess what? Both collars were very long. So, I decided to deal with the floppy collar first.

I spent a lot of time thinking of possible solutions: interfacing? self fabric interfacing? I continued to toss it around in my mind until it dawned on me. What fabric tends to behave quite well, as in, put the collar up and it will stay that way (for the most part) but is still soft?

Fleece!

So, I grabbed some scrap fleece, cut a piece to the size of the portion of the collar that I wanted to "stiffen" and then doubled it.

and stitched it in by hand.
Worked like a charm. The collar stays "up" like a funnel, which is what it is supposed to look like. As for the length of the collar? Well, I just moved the snaps over (it has buttons but they don't work) and made an asymmetrical collar. (Works for me).

For my parting shot, here's how I assembled my buttons. First I did a covered button using some black mesh scraps.

Then I picked up my handy needle and thread and sewed the sweater fabric over the covered button, leaving the shank exposed so I could sew it on the sweater. Easy peasy. (The sweater fabric would not cooperate with the covered button and silver showed through -- necessity really is the mother of all invention). Well, I'm done with this scatterbrained post. Off to do other things. Ciao.

Butterick 5387 and Ottobre Woman 2.2009 (No. 11 Swing Jersey Skirt )

Greetings from the cold garage.

I made this ensemble several weeks ago, but didn't post it because I was pretty sure that I disliked it. Well, I do dislike it, when I wear it like this (which I only did once).

What don't I like? Well, the shirt for starters. It's Butterick 5387 and it's just okay. I doubt I will attempt another shirt from this pattern again.

I don't like the finishing details. I opted for a retail look -- serged hems left exposed in contrasting tread. Nope, don't like it.

Here's what you see when I'm walking away from you. Where's my waist?? (note: the skirt's hem is actually even. I was tugging at my ensemble prior to taking this picture and got everything off kilter).

Oh yeah, the skirt. I like it. It's from Ottobre Woman 2/2009. It's #11, the Swing Jersey Skirt. It's a 10-gore skirt that is easy peasy to put together. This pattern has been deemed wardrobe basic.
But have no fear. I was inspired to go back to the closet and find a way to make this work and here it is:Now this I like. A lot. So, the skirt set sucks when it's "alone", but with the sweater it works. My waist is back and the crazy colors don't mess with your eyes. The neckline of this fugly shirt still shows, but whatever. Now I'll just go back and hem the skirt and sleeves in a more conventional manner.

Let's Get it Started in Heyah - Garage Studio Productions

Let's get this started:

I've finally found a place to take pictures and please, don't be jealous of my beautiful studio. I know it's gorgeous. Not only does it have proper lighting, but also has a shelf at the right height where I can perch my camera and support it with a box of sandwich bags. So, without further ado, I bring you some items from my Florida winter collection (caution: the items I am making are quite simple and frankly, very boring).

This is what I wore to work yesterday. The dress is Butterick 5247. Fabric is an acrylic sweater knit that I got from Fabric.com last year (I think). This pattern is perfect in its simplicity for a sweater knit.

The cardigan is made from a boucle knit that I got on Ebay several years ago using Butterick 5394. If you've followed this blog for any amount of time, you know that I tend to sew in multiples (I am determined to get my money's worth out of any pattern and $1.99 is $1.99, although I think this one may have cost me .99.
I'm not crazy about the feel of the acrylic sweater knit, but I do love the boucle. Both are lightweight sweater knits, which makes them perfect for Florida, but will require layering when we have our one week of winter in January, which means that I'm going to have to break out my Perfect T-Shirt pattern and make some long sleeved knit shirts to wear with all of these garments.

THE SWEATER DRESS

I do believe this dress borders on too short for work, but I wore it anyway and will probably continue to do so, with opaque black tights rather than the ones I wore yesterday.

Here's a close up of the sweater. Like the expression on my face? It's my "I am so over taking pictures of myself" expression. You also get a nice shot of the floor in the garage. Jealous of my new photo studio yet?

And a view from the back for the sake of torture. After having worn this ensemble all day (the building where I work was running A/C yesterday..brrrr), I have come to the conclusion that if I am going to wear a sweater over this dress it needs a belt which leads to another problem... it's even shorter when I belt it and therefore not appropriate for work.

Being resourceful and mindful of the fact that I can only sew so fast, I made sure that this dress can do double duty as a casual outfit.

I actually like it better as a belted tunic. Here it is paired up with a pair of leggings (Ottobre Woman 2/2008) made from a swimsuit knit I got on clearance from Fashion Fabrics Club. I love this fabric -- it's so stretchy!

While I was taking such professional pictures with my little PHD camera (P.H.D. = push here, dummy) in my fancy studio, I decided to show you another sweatery jacket. Welcome to my dojo indeed. This is Butterick 5394 again. The fabric is one of those fancy fleece fabrics -- it really resembles a bathrobe. Well, a bathrobe with fancy feathery trim. But it's warm without being too warm. Again, perfect for our weather.

Here's a closeup of the funky trim. I sewed it on by machine using my rolling foot. I know for a fact that I did not buy this trim (or this fabric, for that matter), so that leaves my mother as the guilty party.

Good News...Bad News

The good news is that I'm making incredible progress with my sweaters and sweater dresses, as evidenced by this picture of them hanging in my sewing room waiting for their hems.
The bad news is that by the time I get home from work it's too dark outside to take pictures and the lighting in the house is pretty crappy when it comes to indoor shots. So, my dress form will have to do the modeling....after I dig it out of the mountain of fabric scraps that have collected around it waiting for me to finish up my current projects (and yes, my sewing room looks like a war zone). Hopefully I'll dig it out this weekend and snap some photos. Or, if I'm feeling really ambitious -- I'll make it outside for some photos.

Simplicity 2700

This is my first attempt at Simplicity 2700 -- Amazing Fit pants. Unfortunately, I did not get an amazing fit, but it's certainly better than anything I've tried in retail. The lack of amazing fit, of course, was due to operator error.
The fit wasn't too bad when I tried them on at home. The only thing that I knew I wanted to do was raise the back waist at CB 1.5 inches.
After wearing them all day, however, I realized my big mistake.
I picked the wrong size for the back. I decided to use the average fit in front and curvy in back. Big mistake. I'm not sure who I was making this pants for -- certainly not to fit me. I just assumed that I had to cover some ground in the back, but as you can see from this picture
there's just too much room back there. Now a small part of this was due to measuring and not wearing the knickers I planned to wear with this pants (I hate VPL!). But, it was a very small part. I came home after wearing these all day and measured myself again -- with and without these particular knickers (they are shapewear) and the difference was relatively negligible. It certainly didn't account for inches of extra fabric gathering in the back. The problem was my measurements. I must have just randomly added two inches to my hips and waist just for fun. Speaking of waist, the biggest frustration with this trousers was the waist. I couldn't seem to get the waistband small enough. So, I'll consult the many books I have and start a second pair, a size smaller, with a raised CB and wider darts and see what happens. One good thing, I don't mind trashing these when I eventually get my fit -- the fabric I'm using is a Ralph Lauren twill from Fabric.com that I got when they put it in the $1.95 /yard clearance. Add my 25 or 30% off coupon (don't remember which) and it came to approximately $1.79 / yard.

A part of me wants to scrap this entire fitting process, but the other part (and it's much louder) says to keep trying. It's all part of the learning process and by the time I'm finished, I'll be able to whip these babies out in a couple of hours. It is frustrating though...

I'm not sure when I'm going to attempt the second pair. I keep creating UFOs like it's a goal or something. Ah well...

Kwik Sew 3722

My latest Kwik Sew project was 3722. I have a thing for big sweatshirts, so I thought this would be fun to make. It was quite easy, though I'm still not sure about the shirts and that has everything to do with the fabric.
The fabric I chose is a fabric that's been hanging out in the closet for about a year. I bought it at Fabric.com in the $1.95/yard clearance with the intention of using it to practice making sweater sets. It's called: Cashmeri and is a polyester knit that is brushed on one side (inside) and ribbed on the outside. Since it's been sitting around so long and I have yet to make a sweater set, I used it. It is very lightweight, which is a good thing in Florida. Regular sweatshirts get very little use given the number of hot days we have versus cold.
These shirts do have their problems, and it's all in the fabric and my decision to use iron-ons. Let's just say that even with a press sheet, the fabric turned shiny and shiny did not come out in the wash, nor did it respond to a nice vinegar rub (I actually pulled out the vinegar because I managed to scorch the blue one).
I also had to ask myself why I was making such large tops. Yards and yards of fabric on me only serves to make me look like Shamu from behind.
So, I stuck the in the garage until I decided what to do with them -- Goodwill? Or do I stick with my original plan to wear them around the house on weekends with leggings during the Florida winter. (The pattern does not call for a drawcord, but what's a hoodie without one? -- Actually it's still a hoodie. I decided to add the drawcord to the blue one after I had assembled the purple one.)

The fabric really did change the look of the shirt. It was too drapey and therefore, doesn't really hold it's shape, per se.
But, it's not like I ever planned to go anywhere in them.
After doing my pictures last night, I've decided to keep them and go with the original plan. Lounge around the house wear, because, like I said, I really love huge sweatshirts. Always have.
As for the shiny spots and scorch mark...I can live with that too. I'll just consider them "lived in."
I actually fooled around with the idea of getting better fabric and making a new one, but decided against it. It's not like I'd go out in public with it on, so what's the point of making another one? Two is definitely enough.

As for the pattern -- easy peasy. I really do heart Kwik Sew.

Kwik Sew 3720 - Parts Deux et Trois

Before I retired KwikSew 3720, I decided to make two more tops. The first is the short sleeved version. The patterned knit came from Fabric.com and the solid is a Vera Wang knit from Fabric Mart Fabrics. I have to tell you, at first I wasn't impressed with the Vera knits...until I started working with it. Fabulous! It's even nicer to wear. Very luxurious.
The third, and final, version is a weekend top. Long sleeved again. I kind of goofed with this one. I wasn't paying attention when I put on the neck band. After I serged it, I realized that I serged wrong sides together. Arrgh. Rather than take it off and do it again, I decided to make it a design feature.
So, I made the same "mistakes" with the sleeves and the bottom band. Then I went back and stopstitched the serged edges flat to make it look flatlocked (my serger does not have that ability).
I have to say that I really like it for hanging around the house. I added an iron-on transfer from JoAnn's just for fun. All in all, I really like this pattern, but don't think I'll be using it again. I also realized that I need to make some leggings -- Ithink I've had this pair for 10 years. For some reason, there is a bleach stain on one knee. Go figure.

Kwik Sew 3720 -- I Really, Really Heart Kwik Sew

Today was jeans day at work and since I didn't have a shirt that I wanted to wear, I whipped up Kwik Sew 3720 last night.Talk about a quick project! This pattern is written for serger sewing. It took less than an hour sewing time. I have to tell you, I really like this pattern! I used a knit jersey that I got from Fabric.com. I was saving it for a dress, but now that I've made this shirt, I'm glad I didn't hold on to it. I really love this top. It's so comfortable!

The one feature that I didn't like on the line drawing turned out to be my favorite feature of all...the sleeves!How cool are these? I like this shirt so much, that I cut one out in gray knit for casual wear and also grabbed a couple of fabrics to make the short sleeved, contract fabric version. I'll be starting on those tonight! I wish this wasn't such a distinctive shirt -- otherwise, I'd just sit around making multiples of this shirt.

Ah well....I'd better get to work.

Another Day, Another Scrappy Dog Pillow

Finally, my obligation to my dogs has been fulfilled and Mercedes bedside cushion is complete. Like the cushion for her crate, one side has been pieced together with scraps. (I have to admit, I had a lot of fun with this -- no rhyme or reason, just piecing it together in a devil may care manner.)
For the reverse side, I used the rest of the doggie themed flannel. I also managed to use the rest of the box of polyfill (yay!!).
I think it's a hit!

Dogs and Scraps are a Mighty Fine Combo - Pet Crate Pillow

Yesterday, hubby reminded me that I had promised to make a cushion for Mercedes' crate. You see, she's in there during the day and spends several hours in there so I had a blanket in the bottom. Then we noticed that she goes in there, even when we are home, in order to get some alone time, so we decided to make it a little more comfortable for her.

My mom sent this fabric to make Mercy a pillow to sleep on by the side of the bed. I had 1-1/2 yards to work with. Then, when we decided that I was going to make two cushions, rather than dig into my fabrics, I decided to use scraps.This side of the pillow is made up of flannel charm squares that I cut out last year after making receiving blankets. You can't see the sides, but I used a fugly striped flannel (it's that bright one -- primarily colored thick stripes).
And here it is, her newly remodeled crate. She seems to like it quite a bit. When I let her out this afternoon, she didn't seem to have to stretch as much as she was after laying on a blanket.
Well, I'm off to finish the bedside pillow.

McCalls 5987

I don't know about you, but when the temperature reaches 85 degrees, I like to put on a wool jacket and boots and head outside to take pictures.

Yes, it was really hot, but I was determined to show off my latest creation in all its incarnations.

And here's the, I bet you think I'm wearing a scarf, look. Actually, this jacket is a great style for me. I'm forever leaving the house without a scarf when the temperature dips in this area and I'm forever regretting it. At least now my scarf will be attached.

Yeah, I guess this will do. I really do like the cuddly feel of this jacket, just not in 85 degree temperatures.

While this jacket seems to be working for me, my main goal is to find a jacket pattern for mom, since I've decided to make her a Florida weight winter coat for her holiday visits. I don't think this will work for her, so I'll go on to the next one, which is already cut out. Let's just say that I tailor's tacks are a new skill for me and I suck at them!

Well, I'm off to watch last night's Project Runway on the computer. I went to visit the neighbors last night during the show and didn't get home until the very end.

My New Jacket - McCalls 5987

I realized when I was uploading pictures, that I forgot to post a picture of the bag I made for Julien to go with her costume. They asked for it for the pictures. Julien got her costume yesterday and loves it. Her mom said that she thanked God for giving him us as Godparents. (so sweet). And the best news....it's a perfect fit! She's all ready for her Halloween party this weekend.

The bag itself is nothing special. Just a drawstring bag made from scraps and some red cording (meant for sporty clothes) for the drawstring. I would have rather use red ribbon, but I didn't have any on hand and there was no way I was running to the store. It won't show up in the pictures anyway.
I also made myself a coat. When the temperature dropped at the beginning of this week, I realized that my outerwear really sucks. I have a lightweight corduroy coat that I really like that was perfect, but I was not able to wear my chunky sweater under it, so I set out to make something that would accommodate a chunky sweater, but still leave me room to move (I do not like to be uncomfortable and am not a real fan of coats) so I made up McCalls 5987. I, of course, ignored the fabric recommendations and went with a Vera Wang wool boucle. Well actually 2 of them. I only had 3 yards of each color and after pre-shrinking, I was a half-yard short for the coat.

So, I reached for another boucle (also Vera from Fabric.com) and went to work.

While I was working on this, I really expected to dislike it. I followed Sandra Betzina's instructions for working with wool boucle -- serge seams and press to one side. I'm not crazy about the inside of the jacket, but I do understand why she said to do it that way. I started out using a rolling foot, since she gave it as an option and, well -- bad idea. So, I switched to a walking foot. This was my first time working with wool boucle because wool has always made me itch like crazy. Not so with this - well not after having soaked it in Eucalen. (yay!!).

I decided as I went along that the contrast needed a little help to keep it from looking like I added a second fabric because I didn't have enough of the main color, so I added cuffs.

I have to tell you, I really like the look once I had it all together. It has a vintage feel to it that makes me very happy.

I'm not sure about the sizing on this one though. I guess it's because I was always trying it on with a t-shirt rather than something with a little more heft, but I added a snap (it hides when it's closed) to keep the jacket closed since I plan to wear it on cool days -- plus it keeps it securely on my shoulders. This jacket has a lot of ease, so that may be why I'm a tad bit uncomfortable in it.

I also had a very hard time getting the true colors with the flash, but I plan to head outside after work to take some pictures of me in the jacket. It's definitely a keeper and oh so cozy. I can tell that it's going to be a favorite, much to my surprise. Go figure.

Toddlers Need Halloween Love Too - Kwik Sew 3729

Indeed, toddlers do need Halloween love, so I made my step-granddaughter (yes, I'm splitting hairs here -- I'm way to young for this title, but my husband's just at the right age (he has 12 years on me)) a Halloween set to wear to day care. I worked on this this weekend, right alongside Julien's costume.

This outfit is Kwik Sew 3729. Is it an easy pattern? Yes. And No. Yes, it goes together quite quickly. No, it takes forever. The ruffles. I felt like I spent hours and hours and hours just gathering. It's definitely the incentive I need to take out my ruffler foot and learn to use it. In all honestly, had I had enough of the Halloween print, I would have practiced gathering with the serger (I still have to fiddle around in order to figure out the correct stitch length), but I only bought what I needed of this fabric because (a) I didn't want any left over yardage and (b) there was only 1/8th of a yard left on the bolt after I got done. As you can see, I didn't have a lot of room for trial and error (unless I wanted to go back to JoAnn's and pick a number just for a 1/2 yard of fabric).
The main fabric is a rich purple panne. It curled when I looked at it. Sigh. At least I got to play with iron ons. Like this witch

The underskirt is done in tulle. More gathering and gathering and gathering.
I do like the set though. I'll definitely revisit this pattern in the future (after I figure out the ruffler).

Time to Load Up the Broom and Send This Witch Costume Home - Simplicity 2834 Completed

That's it! I'm done. The costume is complete and is packaged up and ready for mailing. I even managed to find aerosol hair spray, Aqua Net no less, so I was able to give the jacket a couple of sprays and hope that it helps keep the glitter on the jacket.

I found out that Bonnie is having a Halloween party for Julien and her friends this weekend, so I'm sending this out overnight mail so that she can get pictures before party time and to check to make sure we have a good fit and that her thermals will fit comfortably under her costume (they live in Colorado).
They did request one more item for her pictures -- a little drawstring purse, which I whipped up tonight (I'll post the pictures tomorrow).
(I couldn't resist a couple of night shots.)

I used quite a few of my tools to make this outfit and it really made the job easier. I thought I'd give them their moment in the spotlight. The only tool that isn't in the picture are my pinking shears. The got quite a workout.

And now, the hat. This is my second effort, but I had the same problem with the brim as I did with the first one (it tends to pull down), so I added some flair.

Here's a close up of some of my less obvious flair -- elastic holders for barrettes. There are four of them located at north, south, east and west, so she can clip the hat to Julien's hair.

I also fully lined the hat. The pattern did call for lining, however, I decided to make mine a little neater and hand sewed the brim lining to the hat lining.

And now for the big reveal.

I love this hat!! I have to admit, that I didn't get the tulle idea all by my lonesome. I had been on Ebay earlier looking at the kids' boutique costumes and saw a lot of over the top hats. When I realized that I could remake this hat 100 times, using the pattern, as drafted, and get the same results, I decided to throw caution to the wind and make it fun.

I can't believe how much hand sewing I did on the costume. I hand sewed lining and put the straps on the dress by hand. So unlike me, but I'm glad I did it that way.

Well, I'm headed off to bed.

I'm heading into home base here. The jacket has been trimmed and is just about ready to go.

This trim, as well as the spider trim, came from JoAnn's. They are made by Simplicity. The come ready to fuse to your garment, which is a very good thing considering where I put the jacket trim.
I felt like the jacket was getting a little too red and black, so I added some purple.
Halloween is also All Soul's Day in the Catholic Church, so I added a reminder for Juilen lest she forget.

Slipping Along

I'm happy to say that the slip is done. It took longer than I expected but I like the results. I used the serger to gather the tulle (what a help) and then stitched the layers on the skirt. It changes the entire look of the dress. So far so good.
The rest of my time was spent watching this:

Witching Progress

It's beginning to look a lot like Halloween around here.

Before I show you my progress on the costume, I thought I'd share 2 additional patterns that I used. For the leggings, which will be taking the place of tights, I used a European pattern -- Studio Tantrum Laguna, which, thankfully includes leggings. I read a lot of reviews on the Farbenmix and Studio Tantrum patterns and everyone has stated that they have a better fit than their US counterparts. While I was waiting for the iron to heat up (I forgot to turn it on), I went ahead and traced the leggings. I forgot to include a seam allowance (didn't remember when I traced the pattern; didn't remember when I cut them out either). I should be okay - Julien is rather thin and I really want them to fit more like tights.

The other pattern is a simple a-line skirt, which will form the foundation for the crinoline.
I'm almost finished with the hat. I used Peltex for the hat and craft fuse for the brim. After my experience with the Amy Butler Weekender bag, small projects using Peltex are a breeze. I may replace the brim -- I'm not completely satisfied with it, but I may change my mind with time.
Here's a close up of the leggings, which I completed tonight. I really like they way they look.

The dress is ready for the straps and the hem; the jacket still needs the bodice lining and the sleeves. And I still need to assemble the crinoline. Once I'm done with all of this, I can make my decisions as to the trim (which I definitely plan to use since I paid a friggin' fortune for it!)
And as luck would have it, I spoke to Julien's mom today and she was going to shop for boots. I'm thinking a Doc Marten type boot so she can be comfortable and want to wear them for the winter.

Well, I'm feeling the effect of the flu shot I got today (I always get malaise and a headache), so I'm going to call it a night.
